Please tell me there will be summer camps

Anonymous
I just hope for a few weeks in the summer when my kids go to camps, they can distance and wear masks, but can they run with other kids outside 6 ft apart and do some activity together? I need that to recharge for many more months of reduced activity. Are we going to get a break in the summer? Thoughts?

How should we know

What, would it be like lifeguards where they blow the whistle and say 6 feet apart. With a 100 kids at a summer camp, it would be impossible to manage. Kids wouldn’t be able to follow that all day

They may look different but there will absolutely be something. Wait and see.

I'm really hoping that by mid to late July some will be able to be held. Maybe after July 4th? I'm not really basing this on much other than my own hopes. I'm mentally preparing for there to be nothing though.

One of my kids has a week-long baseball tournament up in NY in mid August. After what I'm sure will be a completely cancelled spring/early summer travel season, I know the kids are desperately hoping this tournament will be held in August.

Do you really want to send your child to camp knowing they won’t wear masks (it’s already hot with those things when it’s 65degrees out) and they won’t stay apart? This sucks, big time. But I’m not sending my kid to camp unless we’ve all already had coronavirus and recovered.

Yes. Yes, I do. I want to send my kids anywhere.

Kids will go to camp as they do every year.

We just don't know, OP. It's possible we won't be in a place where camps can safely move forward. It's also possible the virus has seasonality and won't be as prevalent in the summer (but will come back in the fall/winter). We just don't know, which for me is the hardest part.

CNN is reporting a WH briefing by a panel of scientists who said that they don't think warm weather will have much impact on the virus. It is surging in places like Australia and Iran, and there are not enough people who have immunity to it. Those were the main reasons I recall from the article.

Just got an email cancelling DDs sleep away camp.

Camps are having to make final decisions on hiring staff right now. Understandably, most are reluctantly deciding not to do so.

Masks and "6' apart" are for mitigation for *absolutely necessary activities*. They are not substitutes for staying home.

I mean, I sincerely hope there will be some reasonably safe summer camp-type option as well, but if it's not safe to have *without* masks and distancing, it's not safe *with* them, you know what I mean? It's technically a little safer, but it shouldn't be an option at all.

It's somewhat like dealing with a toxic substance. The number one thing you do is to avoid having to deal with it at all. Try to find a substitute for it. If you can't, then you see if you can handle it remotely somehow-- like having a machine spray it or whatever-- sparing human contact. The very last option-- the least preferred-- is having a human deal with it while wearing protective equipment.

It's going to stink not having camp, if that's what it comes to, but it's not an essential activity, per se-- excluding perhaps for the use of parents with critical WOHM jobs.

I feel like this is 2-weeks-ago thinking. Which is an eternity nowadays.

2 weeks ago, a lot of us thought it was fine to get together with non-household members as long as we stood 6 feet apart.

Now we're about to get fined if we don't go to the grocery store wearing a mask.
