H.D. Cooke...thoughts?

Anonymous
There was alot of clamor about H.D. Cooke last year. Anyone care to share their experiences. Thinking of sending my daughter there next year.

Any help would be appreciated.

What grade?

Try a search of the archives, Cooke has been discussed previously. Personally I would say no, but in all fairness I'd recommend you attend an open house and see it for yourself.

There's a Cooke open house on the 20th. We're in-boundary (and skeptical), and we'll be there....

How is the preschool class this year?
Anonymous
My child is in the preschool class this year, and we're coming back next year. The teacher is great, and my kid loves the art classes, the music classes, the Spanish classes, and the great physical education teacher. His literacy is improving by leaps & bounds, he sings all the songs he has learned, and in general is very happy.

I heard there's been homework in Pre-K, is this true?

I'm also in-bounds and am very interested to see how the school shapes up. We don't have the money for private and I'd prefer not to move if I don't absolutely have to.

23:04 here - we've had mild homework from time to time -- "color this tiger orange," "cut out three blue things from a magazine." "find some autumn leaves." Nothing too onerous - fit nicely into their art time they had anyways at home.

A YouTube video of the PreSchool class performace at the recent H.D. Cooke Winter concert was posted recently on a community website. Obviously, you can't choose a school based on a 4 minute YouTube video of Jingle Bells sung by a bunch of 3 and 4 year olds, but what I saw was a bunch of really happy kids, involved parents, a teacher who was clearly loving the kids and having fun leading them in singing. ANd, the group was very diverse from a racial and ethnic stand-point. Know one should worry that their kid is going to be the "only" white, black or hispanic kid in the class.

If you are in the neighborhood, please seriously consider the school. The only way the neighborhood school is going to be a great school is if we all send our kids there. If we all stick together and make our neighborhood school great, we won't have to move...

Does the school have a website? I'd like a bit more basic information about the school. (We'd be applying OOB.)

1:50 poster here. What I'm looking for is info like: is there a PK program, or does it start at K? A 3-y-o program?

If you're applying OOB, you might want to consider Ross instead.
