Cooke in 2008 was over 90% free or reduced lunch - possibly even 100%. Now, in 09-10, it's lower, but like 80-85%. So yeah, a ways to go before this is a big worry. |
Think of all the money we can give to the PTA if we don't have to pay $2 million for a house in AU park. Heck, with the money I save not moving, I can keep working part time and have lots of time to volunteer at the school and spend time with my kids. |
You can keep your 1 million dollar home in Adams Morgan. |
this is pretty funny. |
Does anyone know if there is another HD Cooke open house before the OOB/PS lottery deadline? |
Feb 11, 9-11a per DCPS website. http://dcps.dc.gov/DCPS/Learn+About+Schools/Open+Houses |
Thanks. |
Has the H.D. Cooke open house been rescheduled? I don't see anything yet on the website. |
HD Cooke's rescheduled open house is Thurs 2/25 9-11 AM. Hope to see you there! |
Thanks. We'll be there. |
Does anyone have concerns about the immediate neighborhood around the school? Particularly after school or if attending evening activities? |
The corner of 17th Street & Euclid to the south of HD Cooke used to be a notorious drug area; however, a ton of high end condos were built over the last ten years between 18th Street and 16th Street, and the new Harris Teeter at 17th & Kalorama gets a lot of foot traffic (and is a great grocery store BTW), so I think that little pocket of Adams Morgan has improved tremendously. The stretch of Columbia Road between 16th & 18th is a little run-down in appearance, but it perfectly safe at night. |
I dunno, I live in Adams Morgan and don't walk to Harris Teeter. The police camera is still up and as far as I know the 1-7 gang is still active in the area. It just feels really risky to me, they used to hide guns in the bushes on the school grounds, has that really changed after the rennovation? There was info in the Michelle Rhee thread on the 17th & Euclid area that wasn't that old. People also need to think about where the school is. Are people really comfortable walking on 17th in the afternoon? I agree that the condos were built, I think the residents drive directly into the garages. No idea what we are going to do when the time comes. The stretch of Columbia is ok, it's the cross streets that you need to avoid in my experience. |
No, it is not safe. It's a very dangerous area, with social problems that can't be eased (or dislocated) by putting up new condos a few blocks away. Or even giving a school a facelift. |
