My child got accepted to both AOS and AET. Which is a better school AOS or AET? Any insight will help.
Also, if we have picked one school over other, is there a way we can change our decision? Thanks in advance. |
AOS is all science which means you have to breathe science to enjoy it. If you really like math, AOS will destroy your passion. If you’re more interested in IT or engineering, then I would say go to AET. Several AOS people go on to do engineering but AET is better then AOS in both of those fields. |
AOS has its expertise and AET has its own expertise. Science and Engineering, respectively. You can't say AET is better than AOS just like that. Many people will argue that AOS is far superior.....again, it's totally subjective. AOS is definitely harder to get into ===> This is a fact! |
I agree. I have one child at AET and one child who went to AOS. However, the part about the math program is right. The program is awful and destroyed DCs interest in math. |
Why is AOS harder to get in?
If you got denied for AET but waitlisted for AOS, what does that mean? |
It means you should hope that the AOS kids from your school get into TJ so those spots will open up. |
There is only one math class, so kids in algebra 2 in 8th grade will end up repeating material. You will take calculus earlier if you go to base high school as at AOS you must wait until 11th grade. |
Does private school kids have a separate quota from Loudoun County schools? Or they go according to the future 9th grade Loudoun County school quota? |
DD is offered AET IT pathway. I am looking at the AET courses for 9th grade, it is very intense, especially Math, is it supposed to be this way.. Any inputs from AET parents is appreciated.
AET AP Integrated Mathematics I Course Code TBD Grade(s): 9 1 Credit Prerequisite: None This course is the first in a series of integrated math courses (two-year sequence of courses) designed for AET students. Students study Algebra 2 with Trigonometry and AP Precalculus as an integrated progression of math topics and learn additional content typically taught in geometry, advanced algebra, trigonometry, precalculus, and introductory calculus. The course is inquiry-based with much of the content learned through investigations, applications, simulations, and problem-based exercises AET Physics Course Code 671300 Grade(s): 9 1 Credit Prerequisite: None The AET Physics course is the first science course required for all AET IT pathway students. AET physics is a rigorous academic course preparing students for college level work. The course is inquiry-based with much of the content learned through laboratory exercises. Algebra skills are used to develop concepts and solve problems AET Information Technology & Computer Science Course Code 829300 Grade(s): 9 1 Credit This course is the first of the computer science courses specifically designed for AET IT pathway students who wish to engage in an intensive study of computer science and information technologies. It is designed for students with no programming experience. The course will cover object-oriented programming, graphics and animation, GUI interfaces, arrays and files, sorting, recursion and ethics. The programming language is JAVA. All AET IT students will be required to design, develop and conduct multiple programming and research projects while attending the Academies of Loudoun. |
What do these stand for? |
I think they are overstating the difficulty level of the math course. They do not get calculus until 11th grade, so only some precalculus topics are covered. A decent amount of trigonometry, but not deep into all the identities. |
Loudoun Academy of Engineering & Technology (AET) And Academy of Science (AOS). |
Why do they call it that? There's not such thing. I'm pretty sure you can get in trouble with Collegeboard if you give the AP label to classes that aren't audited to cover the AP curriculum properly. |
And what about English, History, etc? |
Only Math, Science and Computer Science are taught at AOL. Courses like English, History, PE etc are taught at base school. |
