College and University Discussion
What paid for smear job? What are you talking about? |
Where was that reported? Do you have a link or a reference to a source? |
Just in the interests of accuracy, the claim that she has a special needs half sister, according to UPenn, was made on her FAFSA application. On their own website, UPenn separates FAFSA, an application for federal financial aid from “Penn’s financial aid application, that determines eligibility for Penn funds” so, as a point of fact the purported claim of a half sister was not used “to scam more financial aid from Penn”. I’m not justifying the claim if in fact she made it. Just saying that she didn’t scan Penn with such a claim and they can’t be viewed as an injured party by such a claim. |
Well, I don’t know that the blog stated “as fact” that Fierceton’s mother was the anonymous reporter. What the article says is, “The anonymous tips apparently came from the same source - Fierceton’s biological mother . . .” The operative word here is “apparently”. The Penn filing actually says that the anonymous email itself claims to be from a former acquaintance of Fierceton. The e-mail is anonymous, which means that nothing in it is reliable or verifiable. The fact that the e-mail claims to be from “a former friend and classmate” doesn’t mean that the claim is true and we can’t verify that because we don’t know who it’s from. It could just as easily be from her mother, claiming to be a former classmate. I don’t believe that this issue can be used asan example of a misstatement of fact because the article never claimed that it was an absolute fact and the actual identity of the emailer has never been ascertained. I would also note that there are a number of factual errors in the Penn court submission, so I wouldn’t use them as the last word on the truth in this matter. |
DP Ah, right. So she was giving false information in order to try for more federal money, not more Penn money. And it was using the life of a disabled sister that she isn't actually providing direct care for, to do it. I tell you, nobody has to pay me to dislike this person, and nobody ever has. I'm just a really poor kid who managed to get through advanced degrees, but who didn't have help figuring out programs that would have helped me. And then you have people who scam their way up and hissy-fit double-down when they get caught. I really do hope this goes to trial. I really do hope all court proceedings remain public, and I really hope Penn's legal challenges response stance remains as cutthroat and bloodthirsty as its reputation for it. |
Read this part of the complaint: 29 “Additionally, I partially support my younger sister, who will be starting college soon. I will then have the additional strain of working to put her through school and ensure her basic living expenses are met. Because she also has special needs, additional resources such as medication, testing, learning aids, and more create further expenses throughout this process.” She wrote the same in her 2018-2019 PFAS form. Ms. Shaw told OSC that Mackenzie has not provided, and that there was no reason to believe it would become necessary to provide, “basic living expenses” or medical costs for Cat (who does have learning challenges). Asked about this, Mackenzie told OSC (and it was separately confirmed) that Mackenzie set up a 529 account for her sister to use towards higher education. OSC understands that the account has approximately $6,000 in it at this point. According to Mackenzie, the seed money for this account may have come from her biological father, although she does not quite remember. |
I agree. Fierceton might have actually been better off in commerce court. No trial. They could settle and close it out. Instead lot of publicity and Fierceton looks even worse. I do agree something up with the Inquirer though. But that’s on the newspaper not UPenn. I still think it s hard for her adviser to speak up when she lives with him. Gay or not. Students don’t live with professors. |
They call. Especially elite schools. They call. Fortunately for us the Dean backed us 100%. |
How would Fierceton be better off in Commerce Court? If she had simply wanted to settle Penn offered her a settlement in which they were willing to “give” her the degree which she had already earned and sell out their “Honor” Code violation for a mere $4000 bucks and an apology. She obviously doesn’t want a “settlement”. Like it or not, agree or disagree, she is a woman on a crusade. The whole point of this suit is that she wants a public trial. She’s not going to admit that she was wrong as Penn wants. Let the chips fall where they may. |
Who is “us”? |
Uh, oh. |
It’s cited above in a link from the court pleadings |
DP Universities don't give degrees. They grant them, and according to specific criteria. Universities are held to a standard in this as well, especially when you are charged with granting a degree that enables one to get licensed in a field where ethics, truthfulness, and being in touch with reality on a regular basis are a must. Doing the work is sometimes a necessary but not sufficient criterion for actually earning the degree. And yes, if there is an honor component that was in the initial matriculation agreement that she entered into, it's not just kind of a good idea. It, too, is a requirement. |
|
PS: They want the apology (I think) in her file because that will accompany EVERY transcript reviewed when she applies for a position of trust based on her education, ever again, for her whole life -- regardless of whether she changes her name 1000 times.
In any job interview or credentialing application, she will have to explain what happened, and she won't be able to wiggle out of it by blaming other people. Her own admission will accompany every transcript of the degree she "earned." Yeah. That's the right thing to do. She did the work, and it will always have an asterisk beside it. As it should. |
| Penn likely has enough on her to turn her into the feds for pell grant fraud and also admissions fraud, which could be used to strip her of all Penn degrees, not just the master’s. I wish they would. Why let this scammer defile the integrity of the institution. |
