My 5 year old developed fever, body aches, and headache today

We have been homebound for OVER two weeks. I don’t understand how he possibly could have caught a virus. We already have a phone appointment with doctor tomorrow. What would you think and do if this was your child? I’m a basketcase right now and can’t sleep.

Go sleep in his room, OP. Give only Tylenol in case it is COVID 19. I know you think it’s corona but chances are it’s just a typical kid virus that you’re immune to.

But I do understand your fear. DD, 22 months, had one of those kid-fevers for two days last week and I was a wreck. Then it went away as mysteriously as it appeared.

I’m sorry you are going through this. As a mom I am sure you are worried, but try to stay as calm as possible. Make sure you keep him medicated and hydrated. Follow your doctor’s advice. Keep in mind, that even if he has a virus, it will likely run its course in 3-5 days. I would also make sure you are keeping your hands clean as you tend to him and make sure you do your best not to touch your face.

I’m so sorry. This sounds stressful and honestly kind of freaks me out to hear your child is sick despite social distancing. Have you been making any trips to the store still or taking walks near neighbors? Or perhaps he was exposed right before you isolated, but symptoms took a bit longer than 14 days to show up? I feel like there is still so much we don’t know about this virus and how long it can really linger. I hope it’s nothing serious and your little one is better soon. Agree with a PP who suggested only Tylenol (NO motrin) just in case.

I’ve been to the grocery store once. I sanitized EVERYTHING before it came into our house, like latex gloves and all. Unless he caught something 19-20 days ago and the incubation period was that long, I don’t understand how this is possible.

I hope It's just a kid thing, OP.

Lots of people get sick when they can finally relax. Just ask college kids.

There are also opportunistic infections that rear up during times of stress/etc.

By the way, everyone, the advice to avoid ibuprofen information is not likely accurate or helpful.

Could it be that an object in your home had virus on it, and he came in contact with it after you guys began isolating? Like a plastic toy or pen, sports equipment or whatever?

How is your little guy today, OP?

Just remember that even if it is COVID-19, for your kid it will 99.9% be less bad than a normal bout of norovirus would be (which would suck, obviously, but which you wouldn't be worried about).

Grocery shopping/ deliveries.
Playing with friends outside?
There are recorded cases where incubation last more than 2 weeks.

PP again. This goes for many viruses, not just SARS-cov-2.

It illustrates how careful we need to be.

My 6mo came down with a regular cold (no fever, snotty for a few days, irritable) last week despite not going anywhere for 11 days and nobody else being sick. Obviously she got germs from somewhere despite our isolation.

OP stay calm. I would be freaked out too but he will be ok. Even if it’s COVID, the likelihood of it being a serious case is tiny for a kid his age. Like, almost zero. Yes, everyone has heard the anecdotes of the ONE kid they have heard about, but remember there are billions of people in the world. Children aren’t dying from this and yours will be ok. Also, at this point almost every case is fever AND cough AND shortness of breath. Also, I was wary of the ibuprofen claims too, but they’re not giving it in hospitals just in case. So I would stick to Tylenol.

Keep us updated. He will be ok!
