Why do cheaters always try to come back?

Why is it that some men will lie and cheat and dump a woman for someone else and then attempt to slither back to her? Is it regret? Remorse? Just trying to test the waters? Trying to see if the woman will fall for their BS again?

My cheater did try to come back he said, "I don't want to be with her I really want to be with you but I'm afraid if I came back to you then you would just end up not wanting to be with me and I'd have nobody." I said, "Well, how about you get rid of her and see what happens."

He did not do that. He stayed with her and a few years later married her and now they've been married for 13 years. I hear through the grapevine (over the years) that he's pretty miserable but that's just too bad isn't it?
I don't really care anymore, he never deserved me and he managed to prove it. But yeah, he kind of wanted to come back at one point.

My life has been fine without him, however, even though it was very difficult to deal with there for awhile.

Because they think of you as a sucker. They're probably "coming back" to other women, too. It's a numbers game. Someone is bound to take them. They are sociopaths and you are nothing to them.

Not for anything more than to have a little strange on the side. They love having exes readily available to them but it’s only for sex . Please don’t be flattered by this because they’re doing this with everyone!

I'm not flattered at all. I'm annoyed and insulted that he would even try!! We co-parent so I can't just cut off communication, but lately he's been slipping in a lot of conversation that has absolutely nothing to do with co-parenting.
