FCPS - Why can't teachers do one hour Zoom?

Anonymous
My kindergartener MISSES her teacher, she misses her friends. Why can't the teachers just do a half hour story time? Plenty of other local school districts are doing this - MCPS, FCCPS, APS, ACPS.

I know the reason is equity - then why can't FCPS hand out computers and hotspots when they hand out food??? Why can't they literally drive a van around and hadn't out computers to people who need them? Why am I not hearing anything else about equity issues from anywhere else in the region?? DC? Howard County? PG County? What the hell is wrong with Fairfax County????

Our school sent out a technology survey and issued chrome books to students who needed them. We have 3 chrome books now for our 3 elementary school children, which is great because then we can use our own laptops for our own work. We just signed waivers saying we would return it, like checking out a library book. Why should chromebooks and other computers just sit in classrooms and libraries unused? It's been so helpful because they are doing everything online now.

I assume this is not for an FCPS school?

No YOU get a grip, asshole. The schools are saying they cannot educate all children because some children don't have access to technology. So HELL YEAH, they should make sure those kids who need the technology get it. I'm not going to have my child go three months without any education because Fairfax County, which has a TON of money, is too f-ing lazy to get laptops that they already own to the children who need them. They DID do a technology survey, they WERE going to hand them out last Monday, then they closed the schools because one teacher at ONE school (out of hundreds) was positive. And she hadn't even been at school in a week.

I imagine there will be a LOT of turnover in the school board the next time there is an election.

And why are you taking laptops away from the children who REALLY need them?

Zoom is not approved for instruction in FCPS. Any FCPS teacher using it faces a reprimand.

Could you PLEASE lay off until the end of the week? FCPS has 190,000 students. They are doing the best that they can. Many teachers didn’t even have their *laptops* until principals allowed them back into the building for literally 10 minutes today. Buildings have been ordered closed. Instructional devices provided 2 weeks’ worth of work on Blackboard. Have you done it all? And if your child misses classmates so much, why don’t YOU organize a Zoom play date among children?

FCPS is such a piece of shit. Zoom is offering its services FREE to schools, it's the best thing out there, and FCPS administration is saying no?

No, I'm not laying off. It's already been two weeks. Literally every one else I know in other parts of the country has received SOMETHING from their schools. I don't care that it's 190,000 students. Learn how to scale up. This is a terrible place to live, we're moving as soon as feasible.

And yes we've done almost all of the worthless crap you put up on Blackboard.

FCC is not doing Zoom but there is a conference feature on Schoology that is similar and they are using that. Still not teaching any new stuff but that might change in April according to the superintendent.

I'm wondering if everybody who says FCPS is so much better than FCCPS because big is better, more academic choices, athletics are better, etc. still feels that way right about now.

Fcps is doing this too.

Surveys were sent out last week by our school.

It is for kids who do not have laptops or computers at home, not for families who don't want to share devices within the family unit.

Uh, ok. Every classroom has a set for each child, so EVERY student who requested one, got one. Otherwise as I said, they would just be collecting dust in classrooms.

Fcps is doing this.

Our school did the survey last Thursday or Friday, with a plan to distribute laptops as soon as the district greenlights it.
