My dog is 16, and over the past few days he's seemed much more on edge. Could it be possible that he's picking up on our anxiety? He's peed in the house more often than usual and is having a harder time settling down like he usually does. DH WFH typically, so he's used to having someone in the house during the week, but he isn't used to me and the kids being home. He still has his appetite and isn't drinking any more than usual, but he still seems a bit off. He's sleeping through the night.
If it continues I will call the vet, but just curious if anyone else's dog seems to be feeling the change in circumstances as well. |
| My dog seems unusually chill and snuggly. |
| He’s 16. Nine of that seems unusual for a 16 year old dog. |
| Maybe it’s just adjusting to the new schedule of people being home all the time |
| ^^none of that |
| Animals can sense fear. He is picking up on your anxiety. give him extra cuddles and he will be fine. |
| My dog is happy as a clam. She's living her best life having someone home with her all day, multiple walks and the ability to lay outside in the sun for most of the day which is something she loves to do. I wish I was her! |
| He's picking up on the anxiety. |
I know, but this is different, even for him. He does have a history of kidney issues so I have to be vigilant. Unfortunately, the only treatment for high kidney levels is what we're already doing. I guess we could get a blood test and see if anything is going on, which is what I'm sure the vet will recommend when I call. -OP |
That's what I was thinking at first. I'm immunocompromised and am having a lot of anxiety about what's going on, and DH is anxious about the financial situation. I just wanted to get a sense of whether or not this could be a component before I jump to conclusions. -OP |
| Yes, mine has been on edge too over the last few days. He’s starting to settle down a bit today. |
Yes, the excessive peeing in the house makes me concerned for a UTI. Good call to check with vet, OP. |

I would get him checked out. It could be that he’s picking up on your anxiety, but the peeing seems unusual.
My dog is also 16 and is just super happy to have me in the house more! Just took a family walk and now he’s resting. If his attitude and behavior changed, I would take him in. 16 is old! |

I was literally just coming on this board to ask the same question. Our 3-year-old lab has seemed anxious/needy since we are in our new routine (all four of us home all day). Appreciate any suggestions on how to help him adjust - maybe it will simply take time? One thing I have considered is putting him in his crate for a few hours a day so he can chill. Most weekdays he sleeps 6-7 hours while we are away but when we are home he is up and about other than brief naps. We have been keeping his feeding/walk schedules regular.
Good luck to everyone (two and four legged) during this strange time. |

Mine is happy that it’s a perpetual weekend: kids, family walks, noise and fun... |
