Has CYA Always Been Racist?

My daughter heat a game this weekend and I had the opportunity to watch the second half of the previous basketball game where there was an all white team playing against a more diverse team with a black coach. The officiating was the most discusting thing I’d ever seen in kids sports. I mean this was horrible and obvious. At one point a kid had gotten a steal, was headed for a layup, and the ref blew the whistle saying the white coach called timeout before the steal about 5 seconds prior before the steal.

These where kids in 4th grade and adults are okay cheating them? My kids weren’t even involved in that game, but what I saw was so horrendous that I can’t deal with the Chantilly Youth Association anymore.

Does CYA have a history of this?

Yes, our experience as well.

My daughter played on a basketball team and honestly it was horrible.

The same thing happened with the 5th grade championship over there. Except, the black coaches team played so well they still won.

There were calls like a 3 second violation when nobody was anywhere near the paint, numerous fouls on his team while there was no contact, a technical foul on a kid who was crying but never said anything.

This is a throwback league from the Jim Crow era.

Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions. Some refs favor certain teams and similarly dislike coaches. In DC league our last playoff game, the ref clearly preferred the opposing team (and seemed to be friends with other coach). He ignored offenses (so much traveling) for other team but not our team.

Team composition, both sides, was mostly black (and coaches and ref) with two Hispanic kids and one white kid.

DS plays 3rd grade CYA basketball and I don't think I've seen racism just really bad and inconsistent refs. The refs are high school kids and I'm not sure all of them even play.

I can’t say all of them are this way, but there are some hard core white supremacists on the board and also some real a**holes. If they don’t like you they will make it difficult for you and they certainly don’t want any black coach to win.

I know. I coached there last winter and had a few run-ins with a particular ref who looked to be in his late 60’s with hair on the side and none on top (Like a bird’s nest). Anyway, this guy gave me a couple technicals and my team a real hard time. Later, I found out this guy is on the board too.

As a black man, I understood from the conversations and the treatment that what I was experiencing was racism. Now, the younger officials may have been bad, but I don’t think they were racist and not even all of the older ones. But there are a few and the board over there certainly practices racism.

It's not just blacks being treated badly over there. I'm Asian, and coached a majority Indian team over there last spring and had similar experiences. I can recall playing against an all white team with a white coach one game. This particular game could of went either way and a ref fitting this same description seemed to be doing everything he could to help the white team. Even called a technical on me, a quiet non confrontational coach in the 4th quarter when the game was on the line for not having possession while attempting to call timeout.

I know there are some good people involved with CYA, but there are people running that organization who prefer certain types of people to win and they don't care if they games are played with integrity or not while they are helping those people.

I would have thought that this was the correct call, but I looked it up, and this is completely wrong -- the rule is "play on". The worst faults I have seen in my kids' games have been committed by black players. Does that mean there is some kind of massive anti-Hispanic conspiracy?

Coach’s call timeout all the time when they don’t have possession. Frequently they can see they are about to lose possession and call timeout after they have already lost it. And if this coach was on defense a warning probably would have been more appropriate. Especially in a league where this call is rare.

Here is a prime example of White Supremacy. PP comes along trying to derail the entire topic into black players being poor sportsman.
The OP just asked if CYA had a history of being racist. Didn’t even say the kids in the league were racist or demonstrated any unsportsmanlike conduct, but did say the people running the league were suspect. OP gets some feedback and you feel the obligation to defend the White Supremacists who are cheating kids to try and keep white kids winning. Hmmmmm.

That's a bunch of BS. My son plays CYA basketball and there aren't many black players and the few that play are very good sports with involved and supportive parents. I don't know why you would try to hijack this thread with your racist thoughts.
