Colleges should eliminate out of state tuition.

Make it one price.
Do you agree or disagree?
Anonymous
Nope. What do you think makes in-state tuition possible?
Anonymous
Disagree. State universities are funded by state taxpauyres, and the in-state tuition discount reflects that state taxpayers subsidize it.
Anonymous
Uh no. I mean I like the idea of my daughter getting to go to an out of state school at a big discount but state tax dollars are for the benefit of state residents.

VA kid go out of state to California.
California kid goes to VA.
It will balance out.

No, it will not balance out. You want instate tuition, go to your state school. Simple.

It won't balance out because even with state funding, which has been declining steadily relative to inflation, the in-state tuition is not sufficient to run the university. What would happen is that everyone's costs would go up and land somewhere in the middle between the current in-state and out of state tuition.

Exactly.

And I say this as someone with 4 kids:

1--at an out of state school
2--starting an out of state school this fall
3--only a HS sophmore currently, but his #1 choice is an out of state school
4--too young to tell at this point.

I don't love paying out of state tuition, but it is "fair."

In many states, the amount they get from the state has declined precipitously.

For example Virginia Tech.

You may not love it but silly comment when you can afford it or you'd tell the kids to go instate or would have had less kids.

Not bad idea, but some states with stronger university systems will be disadvantaged like VA and CA.

I get why they don’t, but since we’ve lived in four states since my son was born, I (selfishly) think he should qualify for in state for all four states.

We are also a military family. You (or your military spouse) could have done the GI Bill to pass down to your son. Most out of states schools will make up any tuition difference.

We used our GI Bills (enlisted, then college).

OP, would you be willing to pay income taxes, property taxes, and sales taxes in another state (in ADDITION to your actual state of residence) for 18 years before your kid starts college?
