Big open area for kids to ride scooters

I’m playing hookie with my 3 and 5 year old boys. It’s so nice out I’d like to take them on a little adventure. Thinking of bringing a picnic and scooters for them to ride around. 4 year old tires easily otherwise we would just scoot to a fun lunch but when we have a destination, he quits and I’ll end up carrying him. Or any other ideas for something outdoors and fun? We are in NW but open to drive about 30 min. I also thought great falls in Maryland to check out the river, but don’t you just walk that short path then see the river and that’s it?

Shaw Skate Park? Make sure to get there well before the end of the school day when the big kids come ride skateboards.

My first thought was the parking lot and access roads around Rock Creek Stables and the planetarium. Not a lot of traffic in the middle of the day, and you can ping-pong between checking out the horses and popping into the nature center.

Is his scooter difficult to ride? There is a big difference between ones like the lil' kik and other scooters of the older fashioned type.

the grounds of walter reed are now open to the public. quiet and quite a bit of sidewalk/paths.

Too late for today, but another time try Long Bridge Park in Arlington. Lots of wide, safe sidewalks and nice bathrooms plus planes and trains to watch.

Please don't do this. The church will be potentially liable if something happens on its property. And others may see you and figure it's fine to do. We had to ask adult skateboarders to leave our church parking lot recently and have had to put up signs saying the lot is off limits to scooters, skateboards etc.

Plus: Churches often host outside groups during weekday mornings and afternoons (AA, other "anonymous" or self-help groups, scouts etc.). What you think is an unused lot might have cars start driving in when you're not expecting them.

+1 This place is perfect. Just make sure kids stay off the bike lane running through. People come by pretty fast.
