How much extra work/studying do you do with your kid in elementary school?

Kids who go to chinese/Japanese etc schools do a whole another curriculum on top of regular school. There are kids who go to kumon and mathnasium and do extra worksheets at home. How much extra is your child doing?

Mine just read at home..sigh..

Nothing. My kids enjoy childhood.

Nothing. He is way ahead for his age. We need to find different things to do and experience. Skiing and horse-back riding would be cool.

As a parent who has sent DC to a weekend foreign language school since kindergarten, we do it not to add another curriculum or take away from childhood, but to have DC learn the language and culture of DC's ancestry. It's only 3 hours a week, and not comparable to regular school, but certainly there have been times when homework was far more than what you get a regular school.

I have a second grader. I read to him in the evenings.

Almost none. She has a weekly math sheet that she asks me to check, and I quiz her on the occasional study guide before a test. That’s it.

I am a Japanese mom. Japanese parents around me do study with their kids (kindergarten-third grade) at home for at least one hour, sometimes more. It's just a norm among us.

I think learning is fun. I am glad DC feels the same. We do many activities on weekends: academics, heritage language, sports and instruments. If the extra learning is stressful, it makes sense not to do it. If the extra learning is enjoyable, it makes sense to do it. We are all smart enough to pick a choice that suits the kids.

We both work long hours, so DC doesnt get as much as I would like. He has math tutor (1hr/week), heritage language tutor (1hr/week) and piano 1hr/week. He reads and does home work at home after school, but thats about it

Nothing academic for my gifted child in a magnet program, but hours every day for my child with low processing speed, ADHD and learning disabilities.

Parent the child you have, OP.

We do read novels together. If they ask me for help with studying or facts, I will. Otherwise, nothing. Don’t care about the rat race

Used to take my kids (now teenagers) to a local library every week and borrowed a tons of books for reading (all kinds of books, fictions, science, craft, comics..). They learned love of reading, which is priceless.
