Where is the best place to buy interview suits for an early 20 young woman

Dad here. Mom's not in the picture. DD (22) needs to buy suits for her interviews. Poor thing is clueless, I am too. Help please? Nothing too fancy. She is only 5'2" stocky build. TIA

Nordstrom. Ask one of the salespeople in the suiting section to help find flattering styles.

Norstrom or Macy's - both have free personal shoppers. She can call to make an appointment, tell them her approx size and what she needs and her budget, and they'll pull a bunch for her.

Thank you PPs. I will have her call the stores. Sounds like they will pull the suits she can try on. Is that how it works? Is one (Macy's vs Norstrom) better than the other? Thanks again.

Yes, they'll pull suits. She should go to both to see which experience/store she likes better. Sometimes you just don't click with a specific stylist. I had great luck at Macy's and then got a new stylist and I literally said "no red or bllack" and everything he'd pulled was red and black. I was like "You didn't listen to me at all."

I think that she will get better suits at Nordstrom, for sure. They include tailoring.

Who is footing the bill here? I remember that my parents took us each shopping for 2-3 suits when we started interviewing and working. That was back in the day when we all wore suits every day, but they got us several nice, versatile pieces that I, at least, wore for years.

If DD is paying for them herself, make sure she stays classic for an interview suit. Ann Taylor is another nice option. They won't last quite as long, but the price point is gentler.

Agree with this - my 20s DC got a nice suit there. There are also Theory sections at Bloomingdales.

The other good option is Red Fleece at Brooks Brothers. There aren't Red Fleece sections in all the stores - the Georgetown store has a good one though. Red Fleece is aimed at younger people and is at a lower price point.

Nordstrom is good because they have free tailoring (and the tailoring there is pretty good) and they have a big range of pricing.

Lord and Taylor can also be a decent option.

As someone who is short, I'd suggest you look at places that have petite lines. Nordstom, Banana Republic (BR outlet is good for suits on a budget).

Brooks Brothers is not always the best answer if you have a stocky build.

Tailoring is extra right?

I (Dad) am paying the bill and I am more than happy to do so. She is still under my care.

Thanks PPs for great suggestions. I will have her follow up. Thank you.

Second the recs above, Theory and Nordstrom would be great (I bought Macy's suits back in the day when I was in my early 20s, but I think their quality has really suffered - it wasn't great to begin with). Ann Taylor might be a bit too mature looking/styled for her age. Banana and J.Crew are both good options, and both have factory lines. As for tailoring, there is only so much you can do to a suit and still have it look good - things like hemming pants are easy, but taking in waists or jackets is really hard and never ended up working for me. Best to buy well fitting pieces off the rack if possible. Womens suit options are sadly far from as good as men's ones, I've realized, after 15 years of wearing suits on a near daily basis.

Oh, if you ever want to buy her a splurge level suit - highly recommend Hugo Boss suits. They are $$$ but cut so well and made from highly quality fabric.

It’s hard for a 22 year old but the suit SHOULD look dowdy unless it’s a fashion industry job or similar.
