Where is the best place to buy interview suits for an early 20 young woman

Not for a stocky build.

Does she definitely need a suit? Depending on her industry, she could also do a blazer with a tailored dress. I agree with Ann Taylor.

If she is only interviewing right now she needs 2 suits.
I would recommend a pant suit - because there is NO discussion if the skirt is inappropriate and no discussion on exposed legs - but she needs to have something that she feels comfortable and confident in.

A professional shopper at any department store can help her. Just an FYI, the price point for suits at Nordstrom is significantly higher than Macy's / Lord and Taylor.

Since she is a college student, I assume she has more flexibility with her schedule. I would recommend that she tries to go at a time when the store is not busy. She will feel less stressed and have a great experience.

Although you are paying, you need to give a budget. There is a wide range and the shopper will need this information to help best support her.

If she gets a girly top from zara then i would get a more feminine pair of shoes. If she gets a menswear oxford shirt, get a similar pair of loafers. You can really style a nicee auit in a multitude of ways. A classic shell in a nice spring color with a higher heel pump will keep her looking fresh. Check out the pantone spring 2020 colors for inspiration. Jewelry to match and a nice sutle ring.

A manicure and pedicure will keep her confidence up.

A pedicure, really? OP: for the record, open-toed shoes are a huge no-no for interviews. No reason to get a pedicure.

Self care makes you feel more confident.

Assuming this is for an office job (not artsy/fashiony)—

Get her this suit in gray and black or navy: https://www.jcrew.com/p/womens_category/skirts/pencil/no-2-pencil-skirt-in-italian-stretch-wool/J5407

Get her these tops in a couple of colors: https://www.anntaylor.com/overlapped-v-neck-shell/516288
https://www.jcrew.com/p/womens_category/shirts_tops/tankandcami/tank-top-in-reimagined-silk/AD187

Get her these heels (nude and/or black):
https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/sam-edelman-hazel-pointy-toe-pump-women/5456381

Tell her makeup should be fresh/minimal/natural, natural/light pink nails, hair should be either pulled back or styled simply. Stud earrings (fake pearls or something like this https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/gorjana-chloe-mini-stud-earrings/3842311)

Definitely recommend a store that carries petites, as you don't want a jacket that's too long. I've purchased suites from Ann Taylor Loft, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic.

No to those pumps. Unless she typically wears a shoe like that. I know the OP said his daughter is 5'2" - but wearing a 3.75" heal is too much if you do not typically wear that size shoe. Something like this might be more appropriate - https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/botkier-stella-pump-women/5484055/full?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FAll%20Results%2FWomen%27s%20Shoes%2FPumps&color=black%20patent

Do not wear a shoe that is "branded" like a Tory Burch. What happens after that is all the women will notice it. You do not want to bring attention to the fact that you are wearing $300 shoes during an interview.

I don't think Theory has petites and it sounds like she needs a petite size. Don't recommend tailoring to solve the problem. Even experienced tailors admit that it's really hard to change a jacket to make it look really good in all the proportions.

100% Banana Republic. I'm petite and love their suits. They are mix and match.

Theory doesn't have petites per se, but a lot of petite sized women like them because they run small. My 4'10 90 lb friend loves their suiting. That said, they also run very narrow so not a great option for someone who is on the stockier side.

Anonymous wrote:Second the recs above, Theory and Nordstrom would be great (I bought Macy's suits back in the day when I was in my early 20s, but I think their quality has really suffered - it wasn't great to begin with). Ann Taylor might be a bit too mature looking/styled for her age. Banana and J.Crew are both good options, and both have factory lines. As for tailoring, there is only so much you can do to a suit and still have it look good - things like hemming pants are easy, but taking in waists or jackets is really hard and never ended up working for me. Best to buy well fitting pieces off the rack if possible. Womens suit options are sadly far from as good as men's ones, I've realized, after 15 years of wearing suits on a near daily basis.

Oh, if you ever want to buy her a splurge level suit - highly recommend Hugo Boss suits. They are $$$ but cut so well and made from highly quality fabric.

“There’s only so much you can do” is true if cost is the biggest factor or if you’re going to a dry cleaner tailor. A trained full-service tailor can absolutely take in jackets. I’ve had my jackets altered at the bust, back, and hips. All difficult changes (and painfully expensive) but in the right hands the results are great.

+1.

I have broad shoulders, a small bust and small waist. Getting my business attire altered to fit my body has been a game changer. My clothes fit beautifully. It is well worth the additional cost.

Nordstrom may have better customer service, but if money is an issue, Macy's may have better sales and coupons. I've also had good luck at Banana Republic and J Crew and they might be a bit more fashion forward. Brooks Brothers has good quality but their stuff can be frumpier. (I do love them for perfect french cuff dress shirts.)

Good luck to you and your daughter!!
