Feeling like a failure

Anonymous
Potty trained 3 1/2 year old boy. He is having daily accidents (only pee).
He will go alone for number two but wont go alone for pee, he has to be reminded every hour.
He is using underwear and refuses pull up. I have try everything and nothing is working.
I am feeling so discourage and I Just feel like I fail him.

It does take them a little while to reliably self-initiate the potty. If you have to remind him every hour or two, I would just do that. He’ll go on his own without reminders eventually!

1. Stop catastrophizing. Whether your kid ever potty trains doesn’t make you a failure. Of course you’re not a failure and he will become potty trained. Keep perspective.

2. Keep him in underwear. Pull ups will just make things take longer.

3. Put him on a schedule. No one has to pee every hour. Take him to the toilet or remind him every 2 hours.

4. He might be constipated. Make sure he gets enough water and fiber.

This ain’t about you.

If you remind him every hour, does he still have accidents? That is the only time I would be concerned.

This. NO PULL UPS during the day at all. Not for car rides. Not for long outings. If you want him potty trained then treat him like he’s potty trained. Bring a change of pants for accidents. Keep prompting—it takes time to self-initiate. Don’t give attention to accidents. Just say in a neutral tone: “I see you peed in your pants. Pee goes in the potty. Please go change your pants.” Same thing every time until it clicks.
