Math in Middle School

Anonymous
I have looked at the middle school course bulletin (link below) and I'm confused. There are two courses listed for 6th grade - Math 6 (3016) and AIM (3006). For grade 7 there appear to be three options -- Grade 7 (3017), IM (3001), and Algebra (3112).

What is the normal path??

I don't think our school even offers 3016 and 3017.

Sorry title should indicate MCPS

Normal path depends on 5th grade math.

Compacted 5/6 goes to AIM, then onto Algebra in 7th

5th grade math leads to Math 6 and then IM followed by Algebra in 8th.

Some schools have eliminated grade level math. It is a shame when schools push kids past their abilities. Math 6 is for kids who did not take compacted in 5th.

The usual pathway for someone taking math 6 would be IM in 7th, algebra in 8th.

How can they eliminate it? What if every single kid is in accelerated math and one or more kids decides to drop down to on-grade level math? Do they say "Too bad!"

Ok I think that is what DD will be doing. I just got confused because they messed up her registration for next year and put her in a class that didn't make sense to me. It has been corrected.

Our school is only offering "advanced english 6" and "advanced english 7" According to the link above -- there are regular english 6 and 7 classes (just not at our school). DD is in advanced english and struggling. UGH

Yes, they just repeat the same class the following year

Hell no! I would not be okay with that. What is the rush? Why can't normal kids take normal classes instead of rushing them through math?

Another way to "close" the achievement gap. Curved grading table, no final exams, put everyone in "honors" which are not truly honors. Just regular courses with a 1.0 bump.

Why bother having advanced classes if the entire school is taking it. Just call it English

MCPS is worrying that too many "wrong" color kids will be in the regular math and otoh not enough "right" color kids will be in the advanced math. That situation will not help MCPS declaring "The achievement gap is closing"

Remember, the Office of Equity Initiatives used to be under Chief Academic Office, who is under the Deputy Superintendent. In the latest re-org in 02/10/2020, "The MCPS Equity Initiatives Unit and Office of Human Resources will now report directly to Deputy Superintendent Monifa McKnight."
