Team sports in your 50s

Anonymous
I’m a soon to be empty nester in late 40s looking to take up a team sport I can play through my 50s ... I tried ultimate frisbee last summer and really enjoyed it, but overdid it in Sept and messed up the knees for a bit. I’ll try ultimate again in the spring after a little rehab, but wonder what other sports folks recommend if that doesn’t pan out. Thanks!

I am a (former) soccer, rugby, and ultimate player. Now I am 48 and have said goodbye to all contact sports. I have been looking into team rowing as a new possibility...

Thx that’s a good idea!

Another idea folks suggested: squash ... but it could have the same knee challenges as ultimate.

Also getting into cycling, which can be a decent group activity.

You may be too young for this still but some of my relatives got really into pickleball. I thought it was going to be slow paced for older folks until I watched some matches. Teams take it seriously and it is a fast game with serious tournaments. Or it can be slower and leisurely for those who are not in competitive leagues.

My father joined an adult baseball league for a while of men mostly in their 50s-70s. All in great shape.

Rowing! I see someone already recommended it, but it’s worth repeating.

Volleyball.

Basketball. DH51 has played in the same league for 15 years.

Gonna seem out there, but adult ice hockey is very easy on the knees, as long as you can skate. Know plenty of people playing going into and beyond their sixties, and they only took it up in midlife. Great camaraderie as well.

There are lots of learn to play options locally for adults.
