A photo from Gov. Ralph Northam’s medical school yearbook shows two men, one in blackface and one in a Ku Klux Klan robe and hood, on the same page as the governor.

The photo, which The Virginian-Pilot obtained a copy of Friday from the Eastern Virginia Medical School library, comes from the 1984 yearbook, the year Northam graduated.

On the half-page set aside for Northam, there is a headshot of him in a jacket and tie, a photo of him in a cowboy hat and boots and a third of him sitting casually on the ground, leaning against a convertible.

The fourth photo on the half-page has two people, one wearing white Ku Klux Klan robes and a hood, the other with his face painted black. The person with the black face is also wearing a white hat, black jacket, white shirt with a bow tie and plaid pants. Both are holding canned drinks.

It’s unclear who the people in costume are.

The governor’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday afternoon.

Ralph has always been a fraud.

Do any of you foresee a time when we, as a society, will react with revulsion and indignation at these continuing acts of horror? Not Dem or Repub, man or woman but as human beings who just refuse to tolerate this behavior? I have faith, and it is hard to hold sometimes.

Just about every white person has behaved in a racist manner at some point in their life. It’s in the very fabric of this country. That’s precisely why we need our representatives to be held accountable to communities of color and new waves of leadership

Blanket criticism of an entire race. Nice.

Enjoy the feeling. It's what black people face everyday.
Fun to watch the discussion devolve into who is more racist, Republicans or Democrats.

It’s true that most people have implicit racial bias.

“Most white Americans, the majority of white Americans, about two-thirds to three-quarters, have the unconscious, implicit, racial biases. ”

All of the above were foolish and opportunistic to do this.

+2. Northam owes them or the party nothing at this point. Not a damn thing. If they won't be loyal to him, he certainly doesn't need to return any favors.

I'm really close to flipping off the party myself at this point. All our "leaders" are just opportunistic gadflys, their opinions and actions formed solely on the basis of which way the wind is blowing at the moment. No core values, no standards, no loyalty to fellow Dems. Just a bunch of sellouts.

Loyalty means something. To me, and to many others.

Shultz is looking better and better.

I really can't think of another recent governor - R or D - who wore KKK robes and posted photos of himself doing it in his Medical school yearbook. Or any yearbook. Or even dressing in KKK robes. At all.

I'm just a regular old voting democrat and I think he needs to resign. You cannot be a leader with this in your past. He's not entitled to this power, but similar to Kavanaugh, is irate at the idea he may not get to keep it based on his past. There's no downside to him resigning, we still get democrat Fairfax as governor. There's literally no benefit to keeping Northam for anyone but Northam.

This. He just needs to resign already. There’s nothing special about keeping him in office. Whether or not he’s in the photo he’s acted like an idiot dealing with it. He’s not worthy of the job.

+1000

It's time for him to go.

Probably a good idea. You defending Northam and making HIM look like the victim in this makes it pretty clear that your values are not aligned with the Democratic Party’s.

I think the people saying that Dems should be supporting Northam are actually people who want him to stay so they can keep throwing him in our faces.
