travel clubs (pay to play orgs) should not be in rec tournaments. that's BS.

These are developmental teams that do not play in a league and this was their first tournament. Once they are ready, they will move to a higher level. And by the way, rec is also pay to play, albeit at a lower cost.

There are many different levels. I know a third team in our age group played in it. It was developmentally appropriate for that team,e.g. like a big Clubs 6th team in ODSL. Other teams are in Disney, Bethesda, EDP classic, Columbia, etc. This is a very tiny player pool so talent depth after the first team, in some groups 2nd team, drops significantly. It is also a developmental academy, not a travel club.

FWIW, many travel players continue to play in our county’s Rec league.

And first external play since they don’t play in a league.

Why is it BS? The games were developmental and competitive. They didn’t win the tournament.

No chance.

Frankly, I have some pretty deep suspicions about a lot of the other teams in the Herndon tournament. We all have stories about U12 kids with mustaches who are a head taller than everyone else.

Yes we encountered some of these in the tournament. In fact, one of the kids on Barca’s 2007 U12 team asked the opposing team after the game how are they so big and they admitted there were three 2006/U13 players. It’s fine, it made for good competition. The Barca teams regularly play internal matches against different age groups. You do have to wonder why teams are cheating in a rec tournament for 11 year olds.

I saw an 06 this weekend that was taller than several of my 01s. Was at least a whole foot taller than all the other players. Probably just a Lukaku but damn!

It’s a largely new team and this was their first external competition, other than a friendly vs a bottom division ncsl team which they beat fairly easily. The objective was to see if they could play barca’s possession game which they have learned the last few months, under pressure of a competion. They performed well in that regard. The boys had fun and bonded as a team. It was a lot of fun to watch even the PK shootout which they lost. It was soccer vs kickball and we won possession in every game. Yes, I know these were rec teams and expected as much. The other teams were also considerably bigger and more physical, which was part of the development test for them - could they continue to play their game and not devolve into kickball. Will be great to see them in the spring when they’ll get travel competition.

Yeah, that seems to be the club's approach to tournaments. They don't enter the entire club into any tournament. They enter 1-2 teams, based on the level of the tournament and the level of the team. i think they seem to be a very player centric program.

I think it just shows that the club recognizes the skill levels they are working with and aren’t looking to be embarrassed.

Smart for the bottom line.

That's very cynical of you.

How many more rec teams would they have?

That I don't know. I have only noted that they have taken teams to a wide range of tournaments. My DC isn't on a rec level team. Some of the Barca teams are very good and have players that could make any team in town. Maybe the other poster can comment, as his DC's team is.
