Now that he’s voted for the Speaker, Santos is finally disposable and the other New York Rs want him gone. Should be interesting to see if the Hastert Rule lets this onto the floor.

If this speaker has any respect at all for this country he will act to rid Congress of this pathetic con artist.

This move is all we need to know about how NY GOP will act for the rest of the term. This was probably a concession for voting for Johnson. GOP has one less member so expect NY GOP to vote in lock step with the MAGA faction.

The NY Rs can claim they are both warriors against Dems and that they are independent thinkers by ousting one of their own. Threading a very tiny needle.

His previous actions did not show respect for this country. We'll see what his future actions are, wrt Santos and everything else.

Also not coincidentally right before the local elections on Long Island.

From Emily Ngo at Politico:
* Santos pleads not guilty re 23-count superseding indictment.
* Trial date set for Sept. 9, 2024. (Date is after primary. Prosecutors wanted May or June.)

Why would dems vote present and not help get him kicked out?

I read somewhere that Ethics Committee members voted present because their report isn’t out yet and they want to appear impartial. I haven’t looked at the lists of members who voted present and those who are on the committee though.

Is this really the most important piece of business for the House today?

Here's the statement from Jamie Raskin. I agree with him and I'm as hard core leftist as you can get.

The reps didn't vote for his expulsion unitedly. Absent that, it would be terrible for the dems to be the ones who expelled him - now.
