| Creative Minds is more convenient for our commute; two rivers would add about 15-20 mins. Is TR considerably better academically to where it would make sense to rank it above Creative Minds for PK3, if only to lock in a spot for elementary school? |
| TR is way better, but that is a considerable distance. What is your IB, and what schools do you actually want? |
Yes, TR is considerably better. No, no school is worth doing the commute that you're talking about to TR for PK3 (dealing with NY and FL Aves coming from the north is nightmarish). |
Especially if they finally renovate Dave Thomas Circle. |
| OP, have you looked at ITS, its not too far from Creative Minds and a similar model in that its PS-8th, but I feel a superior school. To be fair, we are at ITS and have never been to Creative Minds, just going on info from others. |
| What is your IB? Because any of the ones near CMI are better than CMI, and the commute won't be an issue. |
+1. Far superior! Many students commute from north of the school. |
| OP here, IB is Langdon, and our daycare for our younger child is in Brookland |
We listed these too, and are considering how to rank everything now. Chances are will end up at Langdon, but gotta try. |
ITS should be a no-brainer for you. Maybe consider Langley as a less competitive school. |
|
I have friends with kids at TR (Young) who have been there for several years and plan to stay as their kids reach late elementary. The CMI parents I knew left CMI after the early years and the hopeful CMI parents I know are mostly interested in the school because they live in Petworth.
If you live in Langdon boundary and have another kid in a Brookland daycare, are you ranking any of the Brookland and Edgewood schools above both CMI and TR? |
| If it were me, I'd skip both CM and Two Rivers. List ITS, Langley and Langdon. |
Me again. I'd also look at Lee if you are into Montessori (though it takes a good lottery number to get into either Lee or ITS...or just about anywhere it feels like.) Don't undervalue the benefits of walking to school or an otherwise easy commute, or going to school with your neighbors. Especially if you are considering other schools were you might be more likely to take your kid out before the graduation grade. |
Isn’t Langley considerably worse than Langdon? |
Not at all. Langley has many students from the Langdon area. Langley's test scores are worse (though improving) but Langley operates several special classrooms for autism and other special needs so it is not really an apples to apples comparison. Langley has a socioemotional program and a spacious building. The principal is good and the PTA is very active. I can't speak to Langdon in those areas, but Langley is solid. It is getting harder to get into despite adding another PK3 classroom last year. |
