Texas Early Action is Out

Bloodbath.

It is sh**-hard to get into UT from out of state - it's a great school, and they set aside so many seats for in-staters. Whoever did get in - kudos - have fun! Austin is a great town, UT is a great school - you'll find your people eventually, and you'll definitely have your horizons broadened.

DC got in OOS. Almost didn't apply because everyone said they'd never get in. We're really surprised and excited.

I’m very excited for you and your kid, random internet stranger! Austin and UT are both incredible. I hope your kid attends so you get the chance to visit frequently.

A really undervalued school. Guessing many people in the DMV stay away because of the undeserved mediocre ranking.

I think it's more about the really high out of state tuition.

How can it have been a bloodbath if DMV students weren't applying?

Thank you - very kind! We're going to visit soon and it's a top choice for us. We lived in Texas - not Austin - many years ago and went to Austin frequently. It's a great place and I agree that it's a great school.

Most stay away because if you are a lock for UT OOS (and pretty much nobody is) then you can probably attend any number of T20 schools.

They are required by law to admit the top 6% of each Texas schools senior class. Texas has like 350,000+ HS seniors this year.

Do the math on how many OOS spots are available when UT admits about 18K.

I don't know its "ranking" but UTA has an excellent reputation.

The think about the poor guy with a 1550 who graduates 2nd in his class of 25 at some rural Texas school.

Ouch.

There are many, many slots left open for non-auto admits at UT-Austin (and the other Texas schools). If you’re outside of the top 6% it just means you’re not *automatically* admitted. The SAT range for auto admits is 1150-1400, while the range for non-auto admits from Texas is 1210-1420 — so it’s not like it’s even that hard.

Were you under the impression that you have to be in the top 6% otherwise you’re automatically rejected?

What's everybody jumping up and down about? UVA is a much tougher admit.

UT is a huge reach OOS, and a super-reach for popular majors like business or CS.

(Personally, not a fan of paying OOS tuition for a large public, but to each his own.)

So dramatic. This is the reaction of someone with poor resilience. The sky isn’t falling. Everyone will have other opportunities.
