Why hasn't Silver Spring incorporated?

Anonymous
What's the hold up on incorporation?

81,000 people live there, why not form a government?
Anonymous
What's the advantage of it?

I mean beyond creating another level of governmental bureaucracy that would serve no other purpose beyond duplication of services already being done by the county and consuming tax dollars?
Anonymous
It means we'd have to define what exactly Silver Spring is (sorry Leisure World).

This. And I for one don't want another layer of bureaucracy and taxes added on.

What? You don't want a mayor, and a town council making more rules about what you can and can't do? And a police force to see to it? All while you pay for their salaries?

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? That's not appealing to you?

I live in the city of Rockville and not “Rockville”. Taxes are higher but I like what we get. The city gets to decide a lot of things that the county council decides elsewhere. Like they voted to allow building at Twinbrook beyond the 120% school capacity at WJ. I’m 100% behind that decision.

So, your city decided it wanted to increase its real estate tax base, and overcrowded county schools be damned, huh?

Yeah, see.... that's a compelling argument for NOT incorporating.

I like what they did. That area on Rockville Pike needs redevelopment. Incorporation allows the city to improve itself and look after its citizens. If they had those stupid ridiculous capacity rules in the past, King Farm and Fallsgrove would never have been built. The city school capacity rules are backwards. You don’t stop building when schools are full, you build more schools.

Oh and hey, it’s not just the city of Rockville, you know that the county council did the exact same thing right? Except they did it for affordable housing. Good luck getting more property tax out of that. I prefer the city of Rockville approach. The whole MPDU program should be cancelled by the way. It just drives up the prices for all the other units in buildings since they have to subsidize the cheap units. It looks like the county council wants all MPDU’s (or senior housing). Read the link, it’s pathetic. 10 or fewer school children generated OR low income housing are the exceptions for the county. I’ll take the city rules any day. They seem far more concerned with good governance.

I do know about it and they made it better but should get rid of it altogether like Perzchala mentioned last year in one of the council meetings. I agree with getting rid of it. Did you know the county does not allow MPDU’s to be sold at market rate for 30 years? That locks people out of the property ladder.

It also maintains the MPDUs as MPDUs. And there being MPDUs is the whole point of the MPDU program.

. That makes no sense MPDU’s pay into the program when sold at market rate. Also, we should get rid of MPDU since they drive up prices for everyone else.

Np If you want it op than I suggest you move to somewhere that has it already. This is one of the reasons we don't live in Takoma park!

Actually we live in "outer silver spring" precisely because it's not incorporated, the taxes are lower, and we don't have as many rules, and no HOA in our case.
