NIPT test if low risk

Anonymous
Anyone take this test even when low risk and consider it to be worth the cost (my insurance won’t cover if I’m not authorized which I most likely won’t be from Doctor).

Most companies doing these tests offer self-pay rates around $150.

Yes, eases my anxiety quite a bit. Worth the $150 for me.

I did it self-pay when I was pregnant at 32. It’s not quite as good a test if you’re younger, but still far better than any other noninvasive screening test. I felt very reassured by the results.

I wouldn’t recommend it. I’m assuming your insurance covers the NT scan, which is sufficient. That was my plan but after 3 separate ultrasounds the techs and the MFM could not get the necessary measurements (they said it was very unusual to not be able to get it.) So in order to have some sort of information I did the NIPT out of pocket and it showed a low fetal fraction which set off a whole series of tests and stress and turned out to be nothing. The MFM basically said I would have been better off doing the NT scan at my age (33) and with my history (no increased risks for anything.)

Your provider may have a deal with the lab to cap the cost for women who aren’t covered. At the Inova practice it was $200. I opted out and just went with the NT ultrasound.

OP here - this will be my 3rd pregnancy and I have never done an NT ultrasound. It’s not the one at 20 weeks is it? I go to the midwives at GW and only remeber ever doing 2 ultrasounds throughout my pregnancy - first to confirm there’s a baby around 8 weeks then at 20 weeks for gender and additional growth insights. Anyone else who goes to GW midwives have the NT ultrasound and was low risk?

The NT scan is done between 11-14 weeks. Did you have any prenatal testing done during your first two pregnancies? The NT scan is the cheapest/most basic one. I had it with both pregnancies (but not at GW.)

I'm 31. The NT scan and accompanying blood test indicated a low risk, but I wanted the additional test. Although I felt reassured by the NT scan/blood test, I'm the kind of person who likes all the information I can get. I wanted to give myself as much opportunity to lower anxiety as possible. The doctor did say that because I was low-risk, there was a higher chance that I could have a false positive on the NIPT (not sure how that works), but that didn't happen. All in all, I'm glad I did it.

My insurance covered it even though I’m a low risk.

We did the NIPT and they got the gender wrong. Caused a lot of angst and I will never do it again. Geneticist at Myriad said 1/100 are wrong, which is pretty high and unreliable, especially if paying out of pocket.

Yes that's what 99% means. And no that's not pretty high. Just like birth control, it's not perfect. It's very rare that any test is 100%.

OP you've never gotten standard of care tests. 10 years ago the NT scan was standard of care. Just as an FYI. I wouldn't trust a practice that doesn't educate you or give you the standard. That said, of course I got the test. I had TWO friends in their 20s have babies with significant fetal abnormalities. I don't believe it can't happen, I've seen it happen.

I’m confused, GW midwives definitely offer and recommend the NT scan and have for a long time. Op it’s a matter of personal preference but I would get at least one of them. We would’ve terminated for certain abnormalities and would’ve wanted to know if we were looking at Down syndrome or similar. I got the NT scan under 35, the NIPT over 35.

I had 2 babies with the GW midwives and was offered the NT screen with both. I was in my late 20s and then early 30s for the two pregnancies. This was back in 2012 and 2016. I also opted for the NIPT with the 2016 pregnancy (and paid out of pocket for it - the cost was around $100).
