In FCPS probably: Algebra 2 -> Precalculus -> Calculus -> Adv elective

This just shows the minimum math requirements for graduating from high school, it may not be that helpful for the OP if they want their kid to take 4 years of math. Note that it does not show any advanced math electives beyond Calculus, outside of IB.

If the kid does bad in Geometry in 8th can the grade can the child have a mulligan try again in 9th?

Yes. Within a time frame you can expunge the MS credit from the HS record and not retake. To retake for credit again requires talking to a counselor and working it out.

IB:
9th-Algebra 2
10th- HL Math 1 or SL Math 1
11th- AP stats,(3 credits) or Multivariable Cal sem. class and Linear Algebra sem. (6 credit at GMU), if SL then SL Math 2 (Basicly AB Calc)
12th- HL Math 2 (Basicly BC calc)

You do not take multivariable calculus before HL 2. You have to take calculus before multivariable calculus.

It just changed. you can't take HL Math 2 til senior year so that you are prepared for IB test afterwards. HL 1 has Calculus starting about now. Basicly starts AB calc 2nd semester.

This seems dangerously out of order, with the year break between HL Math 1 and HL Math 2. I am not as familiar with the new redesign of the Math sequences, but why does it make sense to take college-level classes before you get to HL Math 2? HL Math 2 used to be the only advanced HS class that included proof-based math (across AP and IB), but is it more advanced than Multivariable Calc and Linear Algebra?

Do you have a source for this? The course sequencing link above for IB still has AP Calculus BC or IB Math HL 2 in 11th.

For what it's worth, our school recommends BC Calc or IB Math HL 1 as a pre-req for Matrix Algebra/Multivariable, so I'm not sure there's a standard definition that HL 1 =AB and HL 2 = BC across all schools.

It seems FCPS has not updated its recommended sequencing after the redesign of the Ib Math courses. There is no more Math Studies, or Further Mathematics (the latter I have never seen in FCPS) - your options are:

Mathematics: analysis and approaches SL
Mathematics: analysis and approaches HL
Mathematics: applications and interpretation SL
Mathematics: applications and interpretation HL

People who care deeply about math or science sequences tend not to send their kids to IB schools.

Following this thread. Looking to see what AP kids do. My kid is in alg 2 in 9th grade. Will do precalc next year. What happens in 11th grade? Does she take calc AB or BC? She is a strong math student but not a math whiz
