Got an ipod for Christmas! What to put on it?

I'm the most picky person in the world when it comes to music. Just a few of the things I can't stand are:
--men who sing like women
--mush-mouth singing where you can't make out any lyrics
--John Mayer

I've liked a lot of popular music, from lots of different genres, but I have classical training, which means that I can't stand stuff that flouts the rules of musical theory.

And, since I no longer drive, I don't listen to the radio and get ideas for new stuff I might like. The most recent new artist I liked was The Killers. Yep, I'm THAT out of it.

Help?

You can't stand men who sing like women but you love the Killers? Hmm...

Try Pandora. If you put in some bands or songs you like, it can play back other things you might like.

Or here's a bunch of free music, see if you like anything:

I think OP is talking about all that atonal stuff that doesn't flow or have a noticeable rhythm.

I vote for the song Uprising by Muse.

Trying to cram 1.5 measures worth of lyrics into a single 4/4 measure. To say it in another way, when the rhythm of the lyrics doesn't match the rhythm of the music.

Phoenix, Fleet Foxes, Nico Case (she also sings with the New Pornographers), The Shins, Iron and Wine, The Clientele.

There's some classic rock song I can't think of at the moment that does this and it drives me nuts everytime I hear it. It just sounds wrong. Either Queen or Led Zeppelin. It's going along fine and then all of a sudden goes haywire, and I always think who screwed that up?

I should probably be ashamed to say that I haven't heard of any of the artists Penguin and 20:54 mentioned, but will look them up.

You know who I've discovered recently? Flo Rida. Can't explain it, but it gets me going like Bon Jovi and Poison used to. Am also enjoying a Natasha Bedingfield track I found; good beat, though I kinda wished it were sung by someone else.

Love Feist. And I'm a fellow Flo Rida fan.

I wonder how Flo Rida would feel if confronted by his popularity among the middle-aged mom set!
