How does kid learn how to draw?

Anonymous
5 year old DD cannot draw. She can draw a bunch of lines, scribbles, dots & shapes, but she cannot draw anything that I can recognize. She draws/colors all the time, but she does not even know what she is drawing. She can write some letters & numbers, but not all of them. Do I have to "step by step" to teach her to draw anything, for example, drawing a square & a triangle on top is a house. A sun is a circle plus couple lines around it. My friend's younger child can draw many things without any parent's guidance.

Does parent have to draw in front of them to teach them? How does kid learn how to draw? We have many art supplies at home for her to explore & draw randomly on her own. I think she is a bit frustrated when no one can tell what she is drawing, and she does not know to draw as well.

Yes, you can show her how to draw those shapes and simple figures.

You could do that if that's what she wants. But there is nothing wrong with allowing her to express as she wants. Just ask her to explain her pictures (kids usually love to do that) and offer compliments about what beautiful colors she chose or how bright it is or whatever strikes you about the picture, tell her you love it and would she like to keep it on the fridge for a while?

Ask her to draw something and describe it together. Like a face, what shape is a face, how many eyes should we draw, how many noses etc. Be proud of what she comes up with. Then talk about drawing an animal, how many legs etc. It would probably help her if you draw with her at first, not on the same paper, but next to her.

Does she have special needs?

Artists learn by mimicking. Show her how you draw shapes. She can watch and mimic you and make it her own.

OP here. She can draw shapes like triangle/square/rectangle/circle. So, her drawing is a bunch of shapes, dots, lines, zigzag lines, scribbles, ripple lines etc.. I have tried my best to wild guess/read her drawing, but I cannot tell what they are. She understands a car has 4 wheels, but her drawing of a car is an oval irregular shape randomly on a piece of paper. There is no trees, no traffic lights, nothing. Just a random oval irregular shape represents a car with a backgrounds of many random things.

^^^ Adding, not everyone is an artist. Most people aren't and some people really really aren't. That's fine.

Get her one of the 'Learn to Color. Color to Learn" books.

Get her an evaluation for fine motor issues. Drawing isn’t “taught.”

I wouldn't worry and don't force it. My son finally started drawing at about 5.5. Now he currently only draws the same thing (Sonic characters) but he has become so good at it!

My daughter could not draw at 5 either. She actively avoided it and had difficulty forming letters/shapes, despite being able to read words, recognize shapes, colors, letters and numbers. At around 11-12, she very stubbornly decided that she would learn to draw, she spent years drawing the same things over and over and watching you-tube art videos and practicing various techniques. Improvements were slow at first, but by the time she was in high school, she managed to enter some contests and win a few local awards. Drawing can be learned even if it does not come naturally and everyone improves with practice.

My 6 year old was like this, her drawing really took off these past few months I think because of watching other kids in K. Before that her drawings of a person were a big smiley face with 2 sticks for legs. A house would’ve been a random rectangle. Now she’s been drawing suns, flowers, and people and you can tell what they are.

It should be automatic.

For a lot of people, it isn't, apparently it isn't for the OP's kid and it sure wasn't for mine. Of course you can teach/learn drawing skills.
