5 year old DD cannot draw. She can draw a bunch of lines, scribbles, dots & shapes, but she cannot draw anything that I can recognize. She draws/colors all the time, but she does not even know what she is drawing. She can write some letters & numbers, but not all of them. Do I have to "step by step" to teach her to draw anything, for example, drawing a square & a triangle on top is a house. A sun is a circle plus couple lines around it. My friend's younger child can draw many things without any parent's guidance. Does parent have to draw in front of them to teach them? How does kid learn how to draw? We have many art supplies at home for her to explore & draw randomly on her own. I think she is a bit frustrated when no one can tell what she is drawing, and she does not know to draw as well.
My daughter could not draw at 5 either. She actively avoided it and had difficulty forming letters/shapes, despite being able to read words, recognize shapes, colors, letters and numbers. At around 11-12, she very stubbornly decided that she would learn to draw, she spent years drawing the same things over and over and watching you-tube art videos and practicing various techniques. Improvements were slow at first, but by the time she was in high school, she managed to enter some contests and win a few local awards. Drawing can be learned even if it does not come naturally and everyone improves with practice.
