Arlington: Extra Trash - What to Do?

Anonymous
We just moved in Arlington and have say 5 or so black bags extra of trash bigger than our Arlington trash can can hold due to moving trash. This is a one time issue. Any thoughts on disposing besides buying or borrowing extra trash cans until the next regular pick-up?

Most counties have disposal centers where residents can drop off reasonable amounts for free. I know Fairfax and MoCo do. Probably a quick google will give you info.

Just put them next to your regular trash bin on trash day. They will pick them up.

Arlington is really good about picking stuff up (even bulk items) without having to schedule or pay extra. They’ll take your extra bags, just put them next to your bin.

+1 Also follow Arlington DES on Twitter, they post any changes to the pickup schedule along with trash/recycling/compost tips. (It’s also pretty funny.)

Having family all over the country, Arlington County trash collection by far is the simplest, most convenient and most flexible. You put anything down there and they take it...inside or outside the trash can. That is one thing this county does 110% better than anyone else. NJ is the polar opposite of what we have here.

I agree.,
We moved out of state.
Arlington has great pick up services.

Not having to schedule big items (except TVs or computers) is the only good thing they do. You will be disgusted to find out they only pick up trash once a week. I’ve lived in many places with municipal trash, and it was always several times a week. It’s particularly bad in the summer - we live in a townhouse and have to keep the cans in the garage, so it’s gross.

Agreed that you can just put it all out and they’ll take it. Welcome to Arlington!

Huh? We have our cans in garage and it’s no big deal. In a townhouse garage generally will be somewhat cool. Maybe you need to wash your cans more often?

Re-examine your lifestyle if you are generating that much trash. We are a 6 person household, and we put trash out every two weeks or so. We generate much more recycling than we do actual trash.

I'm with on you this. just wife and I and maybe the recycle bin goes out once every two weeks and maybe half a trash can each week.

I'm glad my trash company when to once a week pickups for trash and recycling. and cut our prices...

I know this is a little old but what to do if you're going out of town one week and would miss the weekly pick-up. Does Arlington have anywhere I can legally get rid of trash between pick-ups?

I've never lived anywhere that picked up trash more than once a week.

After seeing all the restrictions and fees on trash pickup that my relatives in CA have to deal with I'm very appreciative of Arlington trash services.

When we lived in DC a few years ago I think they would come to our house twice a week for trash (once for recycling) but we had smaller cans than in Arlington.
