How much do you tip your hairstylist at holiday time?

Anonymous
I find it unbelievable that "experts" tell us to tip our hairstylist a full consultation price in December. There is no way I'm giving my stylist a $200+ tip on top of a $200+ charge. Why are they supposed to get more than anyone else? How do you handle tipping them?

I usually tipped this much. I haven't gone in yet this year, but will give this much when I go in next.

I don't think I am in the majority though. I just think my stylist rocks and I can afford it.

I simply do a double tip at holiday time. I only go 4-5 times a year max, and I stopped doing highlights after my first child (didn't have the time/energy to maintain them), so I'm just getting cuts.

My hair runs from 180-280 depending on what I get done. Holiday time, I tip about 75-100 on top of normal tip.

WHAT?!?! I think that is outrageous!

I always tip 20% on my $255 bill for highlights and cut (plus extra for the shampoo woman). That's about $60 in tips at every appointment. I feel no need to tip extra at the end of the year.

I wish I could find someone I liked enough to go to more than once, muchless tip some crazy amount at the holiday.

I love my stylist and always give her 20% every 5 weeks for cut and color. At holiday time, I double the tip. So why then do I feel like everyone else is giving way more - and why do I feel so guilty that I'm not giving enough?

What if your stylist is the owner?

According to the etiquette books, you are not supposed to tip the owner of a salon. However, salons will tell you "it's up to you" re tipping and often the owners will say they accept tips.

of course, no one in thier right mind is going to turn down a tip.

i think tipping overpriced hairstylists is ridiculous. they're not making a starving wage.

What I still can't figure out is why do the "rules" state that stylists get such a huge tip (essentially double their fee) when other service professions get significantly less? To put them in the category of nannies and other home support professionals seems crazy and illogical.

I guess it bothers me to tip someone who is essentially making more per hour than I do! I mean you don't tip your doctor? Why do some service providers get tips and others don't?
