Car Accident - Car Insurance Question

Anonymous
Another car hit the bumped of my car while it was parked. The other driver left me a note with his phone number indicating he backed into my car (it was rainy and foggy and a tight parking area). I contacted him and he provided me with his insurance information. Do I call his insurance directly or should I contact my insurance and get them to contact his insurance? My bumper needs to be replaced.

Call his. If you run into trouble and want to use your insurance then you call your insurance.

I just went through this- although mine was more fender bender with both parties staying. Definitely call his insurance directly. If he was at fault don’t do anything through yours unless, as PP said, you are having issues.

Disagree. I would notify my insurance company at a minimum.

I would report it to my insurance and let them take care of everything. Wouldn’t even think to call their insurance and maybe naively didn’t even think it was an option. My insurance does all the work for me, I’m their customer so they take care of me, and don’t raise my premium if it’s not my fault so why wouldn’t I call them?

Your insurance and keep the note

Why??? You never want your insurance company to know about claims that aren’t your fault. Call his insurance company. Do not get yours involved at all unless you have to.

Do you not know how insurance works? His will pay. Why would you use something that they can use against you.

Agree. I’ve been through this more than once. The first time I called my ins co and the agent actually told me to contact the other guy’s company directly. Involving your own ins co may cause your monthly rate to go up. Since the person has already admitted fault, once you contact his company they will handle it. They’ll provide you with the name of a repair place, pay for repairs and pay for a rental if needed. They may send out an inspector first though. If they do this they will quote you an amount that they will pay for repairs. Once you bring in your car to be fixed, if it should cost more than the quote, the repair place should renegotiate the cost directly with the insurance co. Most likely it will all be covered. Hope this helps.

It doesn’t raise your premium as long as it’s the other person’s fault

Of course it will eventually if your insurance has to pay out or if you have an actual claim. They will use it against you. Insurance is like HR. They aren’t on your side.

True but if you go through your insurance you have to pay your deductible. If you go through his you pay nothing.

The way it works is if you use your insurance you pay your deductible up front and then it’s refunded when you’re determined not to be at fault. This won’t happen with his insurance, but i prefer to go through my own insurance. I feel like they have a bit more incentive to provide service and also i feel like I’ve had an easier time steering the repair process. I’ve been in 4 accidents in the last decade (don’t ask...). I’ve tried going with the other insurers but have never completed the process that way.

I don’t pay a deductible if i’m not at fault and my premiums don’t go up either. Explain why I wouldn’t go through my insurance and let them take care of everything? Genuinely curious here honestly.

They're smarter than that. They know, no matter who you call.
