Average Americans gain 10lbs from Thanksgivng to New Year.
I guess I am average, anyone else in this boat? Now, what can WE do about it??? I started walking (30 minutes a day) and signed up for Yoga (1/5/10). I need to eat less at night time. Need more help...I DON'T want the 10lbs to park here...!!!!!!!!! |

I gained 10 lbs too, but am also 5 months pregnant... but cannot exercise: my joints are so tender right now I sprained my knee doing laundry (!) and it took me one whole hour instead of 20 minutes to vacuum a tiny apartment for fear of twisting or spraining anything else. Sigh. DH gave me a prenatal yoga DVD - will try it this evening.
Eat less and exercise for me too, please

| Ive lost 20 pounds on weight watchers online since September and swear by it. That and running. Good luck! |

Hey me too.
I'm getting back on the treadmill and giving up things like eating pie for breakfast. Ought to do it. |

No great ideas since I'm with you in the 10+ boat. Just wanted you to know you're not alone!
I know what I need to do -- eat less and exercise more. I just have to do it. |
| This is not average . . . I don't know where you got that info, but it isn't normal. Do you know how many calories you'd have to eat to gain 10 lbs in 5-6 weeks? |
|
Lots! And they were delicious, thanks.
It'll come off, OP. |
|
The average is 1-2 pounds.
OP, today is a new day. Try to make better choices. Eat protein first, as it's more filling. Avoid "white" carbs. I would also learn more about nutrition. |

Just go back to doing whatever it was you were doing before Thanksgiving. It is so easy for extra calories to "sneak" in your diet during the holiday. See a plate of cookies? How can one hurt?
Stop eating the cookies, eat healthy and exercise and it should come off! And hydrate. Some of that weight could be water retention - a lot of holiday food is salty. |

12:59/ 00:45 again.
It's not just the calories consumed. I had a DRASTIC dip in my physical activity due to laziness/work/cold/pie coma, etc., and this contributes also. I think it happens to a lot of us as the weather turns. |
| LOL. for me it started with my daughter's birthday in October - one cake didn't work so I made a second - and ended up eating some of both. Then everyone brought Halloween candy into work. Then we started getting candy as thanks from work groups. Then it was thanksgiving. (I didn't actually overindulge, but it was a big meal with 2 types of pie.) Then the holiday party season started. Wine, mmmm. Then Christmas at home, lots of cheese and sweets and wine... I've been good about working out so I've only gained a couple pounds, but I don't like the trend.... |
I agree with this PP. I eat a lot less if I simply write down everything I eat (food journal). I realize how many things I eat without even thinking. |
|
I've started drinking more water, actually the diet powdered stuff in water b/c I cannot drink plain water... and it's really helping me. If I'm still hungry after downing 16 oz of flavored water (0 cal) I'll nibble on something, but I seldom feel hungry after that much water.
I know you know this too, but I've found that if I put 20 minutes of exercise in the morning, I tend to respect that effort by not overeating and cancelling out all those calories burned!! On the days I don't exercise, I have no aversion to snacking or overdoing the sweets. And for me, going to the gym is just not practical, so I bought hand weights and do the 30 Day Shred 3-4x/wk. That I can stick with, and it's working... |
| I was born overseas and cant understand why we women eat so much, how much is enough? why do we eat to fill in voids? i always wonder, im a little overweight and wonder why men dont eat as much as we do? lets do some soul searching and ask ourselves am i hungryn or sad or lonely? lets give some thinking to all of this, the rest of the world is starving and we are bloating and overeating, i know countries that they have a big lunch, big breakfast and no dinner and it works. |
That's very European, PP. I ate that way in the US actually - our main meal at 3 pm. But my father had his own business and Mom didn't work. So right after school, we ate. It was great! To this day, if my husband isn't home for dinner, I eat my main meal btw. 2 and 3. (I work PT.) Unfortunately, our lifestyle in the States prevents us from changing when we eat. By the time we get home from work, it's late, and if you're not the most organized (who can be with kids?), you're rushing to put something on the table. And it's usually something store-bought. OP, I'd try to prepare some healthy mini-meals over the weekend and freeze them. That way you can keep track of the portions AND the ingredients. Crockpots are also good to use when you're in a pinch. You can make some healthy, low-fat meals. And I agree w with the PP's comments - eat protein and avoid white carbs. Once I cut down on carbs, I immediately dropped a lot of weight. And weight training is a must b/c the more lean muscle mass you have, the more efficient your body is. Furthermore, it helps build bone density, which is important for women. Good luck and congrats on getting rid of the cookie calories! |
