Why is June 15, 2021 an MCPS Make-Up Day?

Trying to work out our schedule. Any ideas why that date is listed as a make-up? The link appears to be for the finalized calendar.

The last day would otherwise be the 12th.
It’ll get used only if we have two more snow days.

Then, after three more snow days, they will take other days.

No one expects that kids will really attend 6/15. Plan away!

I'm confused! The last day according to the calendar linked is Jun 16. It says L/M?

I believe it is to show that the calendar includes two built-in snow makeup days (June 15 and 16), beyond the 180 required by the state. It is confusing though, because school is definitely scheduled for those two days.

Oh wow! Thanks for explaining. So the kids are expected to be in school on Jun 15, but MCPS is counting it as an ‘extra/make-up day’ that was built into the calendar.

Yes, that’s my understanding of it.

Usually the last day of school is an Early Release. But both of those days are full days?

No - the legend says that the last day of school is a half-day. If it has to be used as a make-up day, it would become a full day.

I think half-days count as full-days for the state requirement.

That is true. The early release days do fulfill the requirement for a full day. And the last day has always been an early release for at least the past dozen years. Weird that they changed it around.

I should have been more clear (I was thinking about actually needing to add days at the end). The BOE now marks any days over 180 as a make-up day in order to meet the state requirements of a certain # of make-up days planned (I think they had to have 3 before 6/15 when Hogan's mandate was in effect.) If we have at most 2 emergency closures, those days are already accounted for on 6/15 and 6/16, and 6/16 remains a half-day as the last day of school. If we somehow needed to add 6/17 as a make-up, that would be a half day and 6/16 would be a full day. However, in 2020-21 there are a lot of potential make-up days: 11/9, 1/29, 2/12, 3/29, 3/30, 4/16, 5/13, 6/17-6/19. It would take a pretty big snow storm to knock us out for a week+ and get to the point of adding days after 6/16.

Worth noting - this year we have almost no make-up days during the year. 1/27 and 4/6-4/7. The last day of school half-day is 6/15 on a Monday. I'm expecting that we are going to lose part of spring break ...

They have two more snow days available before they need to make up days for this year. I think they won't be likely to use those April days after having a short spring break last year. More likely to add on June 16-19 if needed.

Yes

As long as lunch is served, it counts.

It implies that school would not be in session unless there is a snow day. It’s very confusing and MCPS should correct the calendar.
