I’d like to have some play dates in our yard, but we have a dog who poops and pees out there. I’m completely grossed out by the dog as I didn’t grow up with them but my spouse who grew up with giant dogs tells me it’s normal for dog people to have kids playing out there. I asked what they did about poop and he said nobody gave it any thought, and they probably just played around it. (???!?)
Dog people and non dog people, does this sound right to you? Spouse is a germaphobe otherwise so maybe I’m overreacting to the dog poop and pee idea. How do you use your yards if you have dogs and kids? |
oh my god what? You have to pick up the dog poop daily or at least every other day. You don't just.....leave the poop out there. Omg. |
Ugh, no, clean it up before you let anyone out there, otherwise it will be all over their shoes etc.
Signed, dog person. |
Totally wrong. I grew up with a dog and have a dog now. Not a big deal if the dog pees in the yard, but poop? No. We walk the dog for her to poop and if she ever poops in the yard (I think she's done it twice?) it's been picked up.
Also, we have a no-shoes household. So kids have to take off their shoes when coming inside. |
So you don’t pick up your dog’s poop? I don’t know what to say. |
We do pick it up but not as soon as the dog goes because it’s often pooping at night or at other times we can’t get to it right away. In the winter we aren’t militant about picking it up right away. But I’m also asking about just knowing the dog pees and poops out there even though of course we would pick up the poop before inviting people over. If you don’t have dogs, is this a gross thought to be playing where dogs eliminate? Or if you do have dogs, do you divide the yard with a dog free kids area or just allow them to pee and poop on walks? |
I’ve also seen dog poop pick up service vans driving around so clearly we are not the only dog owners who don’t pick up daily. |
Eh, we played in a yard full of dog poop, my parents never picked it up. I probably would, though.
I have a friend whose ILs freaked out that they don't wash their grass before the kids play in it...... |

Oh wow, we always pick it up right after they go. It is tempting to be lazy but it’s exactly your issue (the kids) that keeps us diligent. |
This. You need to pickup it up quickly or it starts to degrade and it’s really hard to pick it up. I’m guessing you don’t pick it up at all, because if your tried to pick it up later you would know what I mean. |
Why doesn't your DH walk the damn dog? |
Your own kids, fine. Someone else’s not without letting them know. I would not want mine at your house. |
Who says he’s not walking the dog? They have a yard for the dog to go to the bathroom. Why would walking the dog solve the bathroom problem? The dog shouldn’t be going to the bathroom in other people’s yards. |
If he picks it up it’s fine. The foxes and the deer and the squirrels don’t discriminate. |
