DMV hole-punched au pair's home drivers license - what gives??

Our au pair passed her driving test last week and will be issued a DC license. The DMV person hole-punched her German drivers license. Why did they do that? Is there any recourse we can take to make the DMV remunerate her for that incorrect action?

Because you can't hold two driver's licenses in this case. When they get back to Germany, they should bring their US license and apply for a German license.

OP—so if you move to Florida and use your DC license to get a Florida driver’s license, you don’t get to keep the DC driver’s license. One driver, one license.

In Maryland the DMV is supposed to hold her German license, then give it back before she goes home. I doubt this was the correct procedure. But the idea they would fix it with money is laughable.

OP here. She is our fourth AP and they have never hole-punched any of the other AP's home license. It is an unnecessary expense. I'm going to talk to the manager.

Depends on the state, but yes. One state license per driver.

‘You will have to surrender your current driver license or provisional license to DC DMV; if you do not have it, DC DMV will accept a certified driving record (issued by the state your license is from within the last 30 days) that reflects that your license is in good standing and has not been expired for more than 90 days.’

does that really apply to international documents that aren't even legal here? it makes sense to punch a drivers license from another state (b/c states accept each others' licenses), but from another country entirely?
