yogurt and middle-age

Anonymous
I'm a pretty adventurous/reasonable eater (I mean I'm not in foodie territory, but I've been into seltzer, brussel sprouts, and kale for far longer than their popularity). However, I have had a very strong dislike for yogurt for years and years and years.
I found it too tangy/sour; would eat frozen yogurt (even the tangy kind) if necessary, but really not so into it...would use some plain greek yogurt as a subsitute for sour cream if necessary. (For the record, although I like sugar, I don't eat that much of it...i drink coffee with a touch of milk, eat plenty of veggies which are bitter etc. etc).

I live in a house filled with yogurt-eaters/lovers.

A couple of weeks ago, for some random reason, I decided to try some (full fat) yogurt with granola and a touch of honey and found it surprisingly tasty. What is happening? I heard the sense of taste dulls around 40...is this what is happening to me? lol.

Is oatmeal (another food I really dislike, except in cookies) next?

But seriously, have others experienced some changing tastes like this? Is it really age, or maybe just a perpetually stuffy nose?

Thoughts on this critically important topic of the day welcome

Wayyyy too many variables here but I think you're mostly joking so that's ok.

Full fat (and addition of honey) decreases the tang and some types of yogurt are less tangy than others.

My tastes have definitely changed as I’ve gotten older. I find that I have less of a sweet tooth, more drawn to savory / tangy.

Oatmeal might be more of a texture aversion. Not sure if that would change in the same way as taste ... but there’s only one way to find out!

I have hated seafood my whole life. Huge aversion. It would be nice to be able to eat salmon or something for the health benefits.

^^it's not happening! Still hope?

I hated yogurt and cottage cheese all my life. Had to eat some during second pregnancy for calcium. Discovered full fat yogurt and 6% cottage cheese and found it delicious and ate a tub every couple days even without added sugar. Tastebuds change but also the products out there have changed and your body maybe craving something sour now.

Dude...I'm right there with you, OP. I just turned 38 and HATED yogurt with the fire of 1000 suns before this year. Now I'm like, "huh. that's tasty!"

I think the concept of yogurt (sour or curdled milk) grosses many people out. Once you can convince yourself that fermented foods are good for you, then they can start tasting better.

Same here. I loved sweets when I was a kid. They were by far my favorite snack foods. Now I can take or leave almost all of them, and am much more interested in sour and bitter flavors, plus crunchy/salty/savory.

Full fat yogurt is definitely more delicious (I always liked yogurt, but about a year ago had full fat and now find it hard to go back to regular, annoyingly). I've made it a habit to re-try things I don't care for every so often. Only things I can think of that are left to change my taste on (I think!) are green peppers, grapefruit (love the smell, can't stand the taste) and chocolate-covered raisins.

Full fat makes a huge difference!

I personally love oatmeal, but I get that not everyone likes its texture. I'm in my upper 40s and I do think my sweet tooth has declined, thankfully!

I think yogurt has gotten better over the years! I love me some full fat plain yogurt.

It has absolutely gotten better. I always found yogurt too sweet almost nauseating. But full fat Greek yogurt is awesome. Your tastes do change as well as your sense of smell. The smell of raw chicken never bothered me during prep, now I have to turn my head it smells so bloody dead. For the record, I’m 57.

Yes, I can now tolerate spicy foods! Incredible.

Same here! When I was younger I was obsessed with sweets. In my mid-30s, I eat a cookie or a few bites of cake a few times a year. Very little interest. That charcuterie board on the other hand...

I've never been into yogurt or oatmeal, and for me it is indeed a texture issue. I don't really like foods you don't have to chew or that have a slimy texture. Jello, pudding, yogurt, oatmeal, flan, etc.
