Looking for pre-K options around the hill/NOMA. In-bounds for Ludlow Taylor, no siblings.
I love Ludlow and School within School, but not sure about what else to put and not sure if we should try SwS as they will be in a temporary location next year- and yes i realize likelihood of getting in small regardless. What would you add to this list and how would you change my ranking? 1. School within School 2. Ludlow (IB) 3. Peabody (figure it's unlikely to get in, but have 12 spots and location is super convenient) 4. Two Rivers (Noma location) 5. Apple Tree Lincoln Park 6. J.O. Wilson (seems v. unlikely to get in) 7. Apple Tree SW 8. Capitol Hill Montessori (swing space not convenient and probably won't get in anyway if my lotto number isn't high enough to get into Ludlow) 9. Miner |
| I should add that that my plan right now is to go to Ludlow for kindergarten unless we got into SWS. I'd be open to CHMS, but don't feel strongly that we need to or should go there for K. |
| List in your true preferred order. You will likely end up on L-T over others, with possible exception of Two Rivers, unless you have an outstanding lottery draw. |
| OP, should have clarified that I am listing in my current preferred order, but would love any input on the schools (particularly in spots 4-9- e.g., Apple Tree Lincoln Park compared to two rivers). |
| How about Langley? |
| Shining Stars if you want a school that is a hot mess. Mundo Verde, KIPP schools in Shaw, Friendship Armstrong, Walker-Jones as a safety. |
| Just have a small list, it's fine. |
This is bad advice. Based on last year's stats this list has a 25% chance of not matching anywhere. (With the exception of Appletree SW which I don't have numbers for.) |
|
our list was basically the same except we didn't include AT-SW or CHML. we liked AT-LP and thought Miner was a good option too. Vetoed CHML due to the swing space, didn't want a 3yo on a 30 minute bus ride every day.
In retrospect we should have just done 1) SWS 2) LT 3) Miner (or AT-SW) and called it a day. I think we listed 7 of the schools you listed and were nowhere close to anything but LT. |
| If it works for your commute at Appletree Oklahoma |
Here's the thing though. If OP's true preference is SWS and then the IB school, she's going to have to have a fairly bad master number not to match at the IB school. And if she does have a bad master number, she's not getting in OOB at Peabody, Van Ness, etc. There's no harm in listing them if you have less than 12 other schools you'd be willing to attend, but there's no reason to think they'd work out. OP, if you're looking for somewhat nearby schools with better odds to consider for your list, consider Walker-Jones, Browne, Wheatley, Appletree Oklahoma Ave, Friendship Blow-Pierce, Center City Capitol Hill, and Friendship Chamberlain. If you're going to put Appletree SW you could also list Amidon-Bowen; it didn't take any OOB kids last year but the chances are probably better there than at the other DCPS schools you listed. |
Getting into Ludlow-Taylor as an IB nonsibling is about 50/50. So look for schools that took more than half their waitlist, OP. |
I agree. I know more than 3 families that did not get into PK3 for LT even though it was their IB school. |

I am inbound at LT and didn't get in and am at JO Wilson which we got in mid-summer. My brother is inbound and get in to LT. It really is luck and incoming class size/demographics/etc. I almost didn't put JO down but now, I am really glad I did.
Even though I think LT is a better long-term option, my brother's family who has a daughter the same age as ours thinks our experience at JO far outweighs theirs. The ECE at JO really is top-notch. There is not a bad teacher among them. The school had some issues last year and we were worried but our daughter loves it and we will stay put for another year. If I were you and I lived close to LT and JO, I would put it closer than AP-LP or CHM which i have heard mixed things about, both in terms of teachers and community. |
This surprises me. We’ve been really happy in PK4 at LT and our friends at JOW have had a mixed experience. If I were OP, I would not list SWS above LT now for 2 years in unknown swing space. The odds for getting in in K aren’t that much worse than PK3 and LT >>>> SWS in swing space if you’re IB for LT. I’d do: 1. LT 2. JOW 3. Miner 4. AT LP 5. AT OK (depending on how much you need free Pk) And the only other one I’d even consider is CHML (although this year in swing space seems to be a horror show, so if they’re in swing space at all, it would be a hard pass from me). All others are less likely than LT IB and/or Miner and I’d disprefer to the relevant comparator. |
