Star Wars - What to Watch Before Rise of Skywalker

Anonymous
I am pretty looped into the Star Wars machine. I've seen all the movies but honestly couldn't tell you the difference between any of the prequels. Empire and Return of the Jedi are my faves, and I've been pleasantly surprised by the 2010 -- movies, even Solo.

SO, i'd say I was a little more than a casual fan but have not invested the time or mental space to be in the FANDOM.

I know I'll be in the theater to see Rise of Skywalker during opening weekend. Do I need to see all the "modern" movies before hand to catch up? Can i just go see this one on it's own and be relatively OK?

I think you need to watch the force awakens and the last Jedi or you will be lost.

Actually, you can skip Last Jedi. There’s an entire subplot that is superfluous.

I've been watching all of them this past week on Disney+,

Started with Episodes IV - VI. Now on Rogue One. Moving onto Episodes I-III. Then I'll watch Episodes VII-VIII.

It's kind of the perfect sequence. Love how the narrative flows together.

I'll catch Episode IX in theaters next week.

OP again. I admit I didn't get Rogue One, I thought the little girl was Rey the whole time and finding out it wasn't kind of just killed it all for me.

I didn't either but I've found in my second go-round that Rogue One makes a lot more sense watching it directly after Revenge of the Sith. It really fits perfectly because Sith ends with Darth Vader looking at the under-construction Death Star and Rogue One starts with the work of the lead scientist whose building it.

Its weird the way the production had it come out back-to-back with the Rey films when really there's like a 40-year time difference between the narratives, but its good.

You need to see 7 and 8.

Can you put these back in order with the names associated w/ the roman numerals? IV-VI are the oldest ones, right, I-III are the Natalie Portman ones? If that's the case, than Rogue One should follow III as opposed to VI, right?

Sorry yeah I flipped them by accident.

Star Wars Episode I - Phantom Menace
Star Wars Episode II - Force Awakens
Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
Rogue One
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope
Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
Star Wars Episode VII - The Force Awakens
Star Wars Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

This movie is gonna be bad I heard. Ever since Disney took over the brand, Star Wars has been trash. The prequels look like Shakespeare compared to these new garbage movies.

Disagree. This new sequel trilogy has what the prequels lacked: heart, characters. I like them.

Where does the baby Yoda movie fall in this order? I'm going to attempt to watch these over Christmas break.

The Mandalorian is set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

Rogue One is the only one of the new bunch that I like as a complete film

The others have some great set pieces, and kylo ren and Rey are great, but I barely remember the actual stories

Or you could just go on YouTube for videos that summarize the entire plot up till after Last Jedi. There are plenty.
