https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2019/11/20/Arcidiacono-working-paper/ A new working paper by Students for Fair Admissions expert witness Peter S. Arcidiacono alleged that Harvard sends recruitment materials to African American high school students who “effectively have no chance of being admitted” in order to raise the number of African American applicants to the school each year and lower the College’s acceptance rate. The paper can be found here. http://public.econ.duke.edu/~psarcidi/recruit_reject_11_4.pdf The data in this paper is disgusting, startling and disturbing at the same time We show thatHarvard encourages applications from many students who effectively have no chanceof being admitted, and that this is particularly true for African Americans. |
| Isn’t this why schools publish the Common Data Set? My son got mail from schools he had no chance of getting into. The CDS was very useful to show him how he stacked up against recently admitted students. He is Hispanic and he put this down when he took the PSATs so it was a similar situation. Distasteful yet but as in most things, buyer beware. |
| How is this a surprise? |
| How low are the SAT scores of the students Harvard is sending recruitment material to? |
|
Who said that only desperate universities send spam mail?
You wouldn’t know that from the mail and emails my kids have received. |
Yikes, it's 1170 according to the study. |
| My DD, with 1400 SATs is regularly getting recruiting emails from Chicago. On the other end, Hofstra keeps sending her stuff. |

The court, looking at the data and testimony of Arciacondo and others, found no racial discrimination. So his paper does nothing to add to question of whether Harvard is biased.
Another explanation for the expanded outreach is a lot less nefarious. The research data shows that where you apply to college makes a bigger difference than where you actually attend. Just imagining yourself among the best students in the country can indicate great potential or encourage an individual to strive harder. So there is social value created if more students, even those whose academic achievements might not get them into Harvard, apply to elite colleges, envision themselves there, and deserving of a better life. |

Any college educated person who is outraged by the email either has amnesia or didn't have strong test scores as a kid. Schools have send mass mailings for decades. We all got them.
Students for Fair Admission is run by an old, rich, white guy. He was behind the Texas lawsuit, Harvard, and now UNC. https://visiblemagazine.com/who-is-edward-blum/ https://www.aclu.org/blog/racial-justice/affirmative-action/meet-edward-blum-man-who-wants-kill-affirmative-action-higher |
| When you fill out the personal info to get on mailing lists during SAT registration, you enter what your GPA is, your possible majors, and other info. The colleges can search off all of it. So, what's to say those students didn't enter that they have 4.0 GPAs with interests in majors that are under enrolled? |
Please. An Obama appointed liberal judge gave Harvard a temporary repreive till the case is decided by the supreme Court. Till then racial gerrymandering in college admission survives. |
The Harvard PR office found this thread. |
| I think it is a pretty horrible to solicit and encourage applications from students who likely are not going to be admitted because their SAT scores are significantly too low. It is most especially despicable to prey on students who likely will be first generation college attendees for their family because those students historically have less knowledge about the application process in general. Add in the perceptions by many people that just being a member of a racial minority group will automatically "bump" up the likelihood of being selected regardless of how low the student's SAT score is, when the reality of the admissions process is vastly different, and it seems like a tactic employed by groups like predator lenders. How is this okay? There needs to be much better regulation of the admissions processes by colleges and universities. And I say this as the parent of white and AA students who attend HYP schools. |
That’s an insanely idiotic argument. |
| Big deal. 96% of kids who apply don’t get in. |
