Middle name conceit?

Anonymous
My middle name is my mother’s name. I want to keep the tradition going and give my DD my name for her middle name. Everyone I’ve told (not family) thinks it’s odd, even conceited. Is this a naming faux pas?

I think that’s a lovely tradition.
- daughter who has the same middle name as her mother’s middle name

I think Lorelei Gilmore broke down barriers in this regard. Do whatever you want. Unless your name is Gail or Bertha or something else ugly.

You’re quite the charmer.

It’s perfectly fine. I don’t understand why anyone would have a problem with this. Especially since so many boys have their father’s name as a middle name.

You should do it.

I love Gail, whatever

You should do it. Lots of baby boys are named after their dads. Why shouldn’t a girl have her moms middle name?

Not conceited at all!!! After all the baby has the dads last name.

But what they’re saying is that you’re naming the baby after yourself. Normally parents name after grandparents or great grandparents. But I still don’t think it’s weird. I abhor my name so I’d never pass it down. Love my middle name though and wish we’d named dd that. I always felt like my middle name was me and that would have been naming dd after me.

As long as it isn’t Jr or III you are golden. Suffixes are PITA.

Are you giving her your first name as a middle or your last name?

Huh. Never knew she named her daughter after herself. Thought her name was Rory or Aurora.

Did they ever explain that? Not only saddled her with teen mom, but weird naming too...

Yes. They explained the daughter was Lorelei, nickname Rory.

The part they didn’t explain is why Richard and Emily would choose a free-spirit name like Lorelei for their daughter.

They called her Rory, but her full first name was Lorelei.

Yes, they explained that too. Lorelei was named after Richard’s mother. She continued the tradition by giving her daughter her name.

I actually think anyone who has a problem with this idea has very anti-women views. It’s a sweet tradition to give your daughter your name as her middle name.

Go for it!

Huh. Wouldn’t the tradition mean Rory should have had Emily’s name?
