| Two gay men were chased by a man with a machete https://www.advocate.com/crime/2019/11/15/machete-wielding-man-sought-dc-police-possible-hate-crime |
| Anybody walking around with a machete is looking for an altercation and not playing with a full deck. |
| A hate crime is beside the point. The key is the immediate threat of harm with a deadly object. I have not problem if the cops shoot someone like this on sight. |
| I think this is another mentally ill homeless person attack, not a hate crime, unless the attacker just hates people. Which is possible. We need more police and these people need help. |
|
We should pass a law about using machetes against gay people. Because using a machete against anyone is ok, but if you’re gaayyy, then we need a specific special law ...
|
|
| I know there are people who want to abolish the police. How would average everyday people deal with this situation? |
|
Why is it that *every crime* that happens to happen to a gay person automatically is called a hate crime? How's that work?
OP sounds like the same poster who starts a "antisemetic attack in ________" thread every time something happens to a person anywhere in the country who happens to be Jewish. |
| Maybe it was Dave Chappelle ? |
| So let’s see, if someone is assaulted because he is gay, that’s worse than if someone is assaulted and robbed? Only in DC. Serious assault is serious assault and should be punished seriously. |
|
Wait, do people not understand why a hate crime is different?
It's not because it's worse to assault a gay person. It's because if you assault someone *because* they are gay, the effect of your crime does not just impact the person who is assaulted. It impacts the rest of the community. It makes people scared, it makes people restrict their movements. |
Geee thanks for explaining that, Captain Obvious
Everyone here understands what a hate crime is. Except for a few people, at least. Such as the OP. Who seems to think that ANY crime that happens to a gay person, is automatically a hate crime by virtue of it happening to a gay person. It's the ultimate statement of progressive equality when gays can just be victims of ordinary crimes, just like anyone else. |
Right, but a dude walking around with a machete is very likely mentally ill, and not some otherwise-rational person with a special hatred for gay people. |
Isn't the same analysis applicable to mugging and actual or threatened violent assault? A handful of such crimes can impact an entire neighborhood. Even one "makes people scared, it makes people restrict their movements." |
But there's no way to inject a "gays are more special-er than you" attitude with the way you explained it. And that's what this thread is about. |
