It's not because it's worse to assault a gay person. It's because if you assault someone *because* they are gay, the effect of your crime does not just impact the person who is assaulted. It impacts the rest of the community. It makes people scared, it makes people restrict their movements.


Yeah because if some dude is on the loose with a machete everyone who is not gay is gonna say "no worries, he only attacks gay people, I'm just going to walk down to the store like I normally would, and if I see him I'll just say 'hey man, I'm straight' and he'll leave me alone."
