DD has decided to do winter track. They practice outside. I know she needs sock, hat, gloves. I’m struggling with pants and tops.
Do I get the fleece lined tights? Or will this be too hot when she’s running? From the other threads, I see she needs a s/s t under a l/s t. But what about a jacket? I would think her ski jacket would be too much. If you could recommend brands and where to purchase I would appreciate it. I’d like to stay away from speciality running stores as I’m not ready to invest in an activity that I don’t know will stick beyond this year. |

This really depends on the person. Fleece lined tights would be wayyyy too hot and itchy for me to run in. I run in Old Navy regular active leggings in winter.
Layers are always good. A few tanks, a few long sleeve. Maybe a zip-up light jacket or pullover. Old Navy has great activewear for the price. Target as well. |
| Really depends on whether she tend to run on the warmer side or colder side. I run warm and get hot quickly .I only break out my fleece lined tights when the temps are close to 20 degrees or less. What distances is she running? She won't warms up as much doing shorter distances. It usually takes me a mile to start feeling warm on cold days. |
| definitely layers. generally for winter runs we'd head out with regular leggings and long sleeve tops under baggy sweatpants and a sweatshirt. The outer layers would be ditched after the usually mile warmup. I know you want to avoid specialty shops but they will have lightweight shells/windbreakers that are good for running and some will have adjustable ventilation. they aren't specialty in that they are single-purpose-- i still do a lot of outwear shopping in running stores, and i haven't run in years-- just that some of the features like seam placement and pocket placement are better for running than, say, biking or skiing. But the jacket wouldn't be something she never used again, unless it was somehow hideously unattractive. |
Same here. I have a fitted, thin, breathable jacket I wear in the winter. With a thin base layer that’s all I need most days. I don’t wear anything fleece, ever. The only time I break out a sweatshirt is 20 degrees or colder. |
