When to schedule induction

Anonymous
It looks like i'll be scheduling an induction for baby #2. My doctor is being flexible and said anytime after 39 weeks will be fine. I'd like to last until my due date, but after that will be ready for the induction. Any thoughts on scheduling induction on my due date or a couple of days later? Should I wait it out until 41 weeks? My first DC was late by nearly 10 days- with a scheduled induction. I do not want to go that late again! For reference i'm currently 36 weeks.

I waited until my due date and then scheduled the first possible time that my favorite midwife was free. That was for my third kid. It wasn't quick, but it went smoothly.

I'd wait until at least you're mid 40 weeks or almost 41 weeks this way if the baby and your body will go into natural birth without induction you'll give yourself a space.

How old are you, OP?

Definitely schedule close to 39 weeks. No reason to risk it.

The longer you wait the less likely you are to have a vaginal birth. I would go right at 39 weeks.

that's not so accurate! why wouldn't she have a vaginal birth if she waited?

Weird that your doctor has already decided for you at 36 weeks that you'll induce. That does not sound "flexible" to me. And it couldn't be for a medical reason, or else they wouldn't be ok with you waiting until 41 weeks.

Stop freaking out. They schedule inductions to get on the hospital's schedule. Obviously if she goes into labor she won't need it.

I would take the appointment closest to 40.5 weeks. Give your body a chance to do its thing, but don't drag it out to 41 weeks again. If you ended up with a vaginal birth for DC1 I think you'll have an easy time.

Ok! Whatever you need to tell yourself. In reality she will get bumped around anyway for the women who have a medical need or who are more overdue.

Or it could be due to age. I'm the PP who asked OP how old she is. I'm 41, and my practice wants me to consider induction by 40w.

OP here, i'm 35 but my first induction was scheduled as well and I was under 35 at the time. It's just hospital procedure to get it on the schedule at this time. If I go into labor naturally, then great. This is a backup option. With baby #1, I actually was bumped for other patients even though I was more overdue- came in at 41 weeks and 1 day. So I figure i'll probably be bumped again, but as well give myself an induction date closer to my due date. The longer you wait the higher the risk for a c-section and risks to the fetus btw. That's why most doctors don't recommend going past 41 weeks.
