| How closely is this looked at? Will 2nd grade 1st quarter report card with some 3s and a 2 hurt AAP chances? |
| If your kid is in pool it probably won’t matter to much. |
| Depends on the reason. If it’s because they have a 145 Cogat and are so bored they’re making up their own work and aren’t even trying on the regular assignments, it won’t hurt and might actually help. If the Cogat is borderline and they’re getting 4s for effort, probably not so great. |
WOW, I am quite surprised you think that the grades don't matter! The school committees before giving out GBRS check through the marksheets. They won't give high GBRS to a child who is at 2 or 3 across Math Science SS or LA regardless of their Cogat or NNAT scores. Yes, they may give high GBRS to kids who are 2s or 3s in citizenship skills as long as they see consistently 4 on key subjects. Thus, the title L4 AAP program! |
I am quoting myself here. My kid is now in 5th grade AAP & got in with a 2 in the writing areas on his second grade report card. He scored in pool on Cogat and was always advanced in math fwiw. I do know now that he is 2E with adhd. I didn’t know at the time of his AAP application but in hindsight it was probably clear from his application that he had adhd and we didn’t know it yet
In the old GBRS he got an 11 fwiw. |
| ^^ I do also think if he was not in pool and I parent referred that he would not have likely gotten in. |
This was not our experience. Are you a 2nd grade teacher or on the committee? |

Level IV has nothing to do with receiving 4’s on the report card.
DS received a 2 in writing on his report card. I doubt that will be awful for him. He received 4’s in math and science, 3’s in English. He is in pool based on NNAT. I am not worried about his grades. I expect his CogAT will be high. His writing is poor and we are working on it. His effort scores are excellent. We have a parent teacher conference coming up. His grades have been solid 4s at the end of every year. If he isn’t accepted, he’ll be fine where he is but I doubt a single 2 is what will sink him. |
| My gen ed kid got 4s in the two subjects in which tests were held (Math and Social Studies) and 3s for LA and Science (no tests were held). I guess for LA they must have graded based on the classwork? But no tests for reading? And Science hardly nothing was done during this qtr and there was no test also. The 3s without any tests were confusing for my kid. |
It's elementary school. Tests aren't necessary for grades, especially the 1-4 grades that FCPS uses. What are you confused by? |
My son had a science test and math tests. I have no problem with 3’s, they mean he gets and can apply the concepts most of the time. I tend to see 3’s on the first quarter reprt card as the teacher leaving room for growth. But he got 4’s in the areas were tests came home. We focus more on the effort scores. As long as those are good, we are happy with his report card. We take the 2 in writing to mean that his writing remains problematic. We have been working on it since K and while it has improved, we know itis not very good. But he is making good effort and we can’t ask for more then that. Hopefully his teacher will have suggestions on how to help him. |
| Report cards don’t matter. The primary piece of evidence is the teacher letter. You can have high scores on report cards and cogat and not get in if you don’t have a stellar write up from child’s current teacher. |
LOL! This does not happen at all. The grades for K-2 in FCPS are basically completely meaningless. Are you from another country and/or marketing a test prep class? |
So you think your teacher will give a high GBRS for a child with 2s and 3s? |
They're measuring different things. Anyway, at our school the AART does the GBRS, not the committee. She takes all the 2nd graders for a creative thinking special, so that's how she sees them. |
