Seems this topic doesn’t get much mentions here. Anybody think the substitution rule is a big problem in youth soccer? Does youth soccer/football in Europe also allow as many substitutions as they want? |
Substitutions are based on league and age. Tournaments also will set their own rules on substitutions based on similar criteria of age. Not really sure what you are driving at but I don't see what the issue is with this topic. DA, U16 and above do not allow re-entry. ECNL does not allow re-entry within the same half. The amount of sub moments will vary. As far as other leagues most allow re-entry and may implement a number of sub moments but in "lower" leagues such strict rules are unnecessary and serve no real purpose. |
What age? |
I think the youth substitution rules can be viewed as a "problem" or not depending on what your end goals are. College rules are extremely substitution-happy, so if your end goal is to play in college, then there is no problem. If your goal is to play professionally in Europe (or South America, etc.), then the substitution rules in the US are a "problem" because it can encourage a unsustainable helter-skelter style of play. But if you're good enough there are leagues with rules akin to match the International rules above age 16/17. |

It's a problem when it interferes with the development of the kids. If helter-skelter is making it too difficult to learn chemistry and team play, that is an issue. But conversely, if you are traveling to a tournament or game in another state and due to the substitution rule your kid doesn't get to play, well that kind of sucks too (and yes, that happens).

There is no substitution rule that would keep a kid from playing. Your coach is lying if they are blaming sub rules. |

OP here. Thanks for all above.
Personally, I would think as least for so called “elite” level, let it be DA, ECNL, Top Travel team, starting U13 there should be no re-entry allowed. It’s not the game played at the highest level and kids dreaming to play at that level should be learning the right way from early on. |
No re-entry at U14 and U13 is not age appropriate. Still lots of growing to do yet and other factors make it a bad idea. No re-entry for the half should be sufficient at this age. |
Would have no problem with that |
no limit on number of substitutions but with no-entry rule. everybody will get play time. |
| In high school (at least in MCPS), and I've seen it informally in club, players have to go off for 2 minutes after a yellow card. That's not a terrible rule for kids (these are kids after all) but that leads to short term subs. Maybe the DA should have different rules if they are truly training for professional soccer but the actually number of pros coming out of the DA is pretty small. |
Have you ever driven to Connecticut for a game and had your DD play 11 minutes? |
| Only in this toxic place would people think it a good idea to effectively bench a bunch of 13 year olds from playing |
I would keep the conversation between you and your DD's coach and figured something out from there. If you were not satisfied, just move on coming next season. |
From the US Soccer DA rules: "For Boys U-16/17 and U-18/19 Academy games there will be a maximum of five (5) substitutions per game with no re-entry across three “moments”. A "moment" is when the substitution is made, so if you do 1 sub the first moment, 1 the second and 1 in the third moment you are out of 'moments' and can no longer make any subs. Note the moment rule applies to boys and girls over 13, so if improperly managed you can run out of substitution moments quite easily at any age level. p.s. the game-day roster is 18 kids. https://cdn2.sportngin.com/attachments/document/fb55-1629715/2019-20_Referee_Manual_2_USSDA.pdf |
