Dutalier gliders - worth it?

Anonymous
I went to Great Beginnings last weekend, sat in every single glider they had, and kept coming back to one Dutalier glider, it was just that comfortable (plus I loved the way it looked, but that really is just a bonus). But I am having a hard time stomaching the $800 price tag, considering that we are looking at Ikea for the rest of our nursery furniture ($150 crib, etc.). Then again, I could find myself sitting in this chair more than any other chair, so maybe it is worth it to get the one that is THAT comfortable?

So does anyone else have them? Do you use the glider all that often? Is a really comfortable one really worth it?

I just saw a few on Craigslist. This is something people only use for a short period of time usually so I would check those out if I were you.

OP Here. I should clarify, several of the other gliders the store had were also Dutalier, and it was only this one model that I *really* liked. I did look at the craigslist gliders but that model isn't available at the moment, and I don't think I'd buy a different model. But I'll keep checking.

Get the one you love. They're great chairs, and their resale value is pretty high, if you can tear yourself away from it in a few years! I spent so many hours nursing and reading in our chair--it's now 6 years old and needs new covers, but I'm still keeping it around in the playroom.

I got a "no-name" glider on Craigslist that was in perfect shape - used for 4 years with my first DD, now using for DD #2.

When I'm done with it I plan to put it on Craigslist and get my $40 back.

They're just chairs. If you plan to keep it forever or pass down as an heirloom, maybe spring for an expensive one if you want...

Sometimes Baby 2 Teen in Manassas has them on clearance--they have a whole sale room. Call and see what they say about chances of finding it on sale.

I have a 4 months old baby and I do not have a glider or a rocker, I just sit on the couch with my baby and it's fine. I am sure Dutalier gliders are very nice, but I just want you to know that it is completely manageable not to have one.

I love mine and think it was worth every penny. I am pregnant with my 3rd...have used it for my other 2 prior. I sat it in a ton, slept in it many nights too...and the cushions are as intact as they were when it was new. We have an extra cheaper one for the downstairs of our house for ease when recovering from my repeat Cs, etc. and it pales in comparison. We got ours from GB too.

Costco has some Dutailiers online - worth checking.
I ended up with a half-price Best Chair glider (not the giant upholstered style) from Great Beginnings by stalking their clearance section - it was a floor model, so I had to clean up some scuffs on the ottoman, but there was no way I would have spent $600+ (we are also an Ikea household...) and I didn't like the cheap gliders.

17:16. I had bought a used, no-name glider before I got the Dutailier. I'm sure there are good ones out there, but the one I got was mediocre--the best thing about it was the price. I found myself not wanting to sit in it at all and figured it was not worth cluttering up my space with it. Got a Dutailier and LOVED it from the start.

Of course, it's not worth bankrupting yourself over. (Ours was a gift, so we were lucky.) But if you have the money and are just wondering whether it's a good purchase, I think it is.

A lactation consultant I know was adamant about the importance of good, supportive chairs if you're going to breastfeed. (I got the ottoman with nursing footstool, but regular wooden footstool are also available other place.) Later in breastfeeding I could do so on couches, etc., but it was helpful to have a really good chair, especially at the beginning.

I got a really comfy one on craigslist for 175--it was in good shape and probably retailed closed to 700.00. Perhaps if you have the time try out the ones being sold second hand.

Yes, every penny. When I divide the number of hours I spent in that thing by the price, very cheap - and you'll sell it easily later, if you want to.

Couldn't agree more! Ours is currently on loan to a friend so it's definitely getting plenty of use and I'm looking forward to having it back for DD #2's arrival this spring.

For me, it was totally worth it to get a glider that I really liked. My daughter is 11 months, and I have spent countless hours in my glider. It is definitely an item to splurge on, if you have the money to do so.

We are going budget on the nursery too - crib from Target, used changing table, and using an old dresser we already had - but decided we really wanted a Dutailier glider. Originally we were going to skip it or just buy a no name brand, but after trying them out in stores we saw a huge difference. In the Dutailier, I wanted to lie back and take a nap; in the others I wanted to get up and wasn't comfortable. We got ours at Babies R Us - they have a deal right now (ending soon I think) where you get $150 off if you buy the glider and ottoman, which makes the ottoman about $40. We also had a 30% off coupon so it came to just over $400 for both pieces. If we hadn't been able to get that deal, we probably still would have splurged and paid full price, they are that comfortable and I figure that if I can sleep in it, that is worth a lot to me.
