We bought an expensive Dutailier glider on Craigslist with DS #1 and have used it constantly over the last two years. Between nursing, reading stories, rocking sick kids, and the like, it's gotten a ton of use - and doesn't squeak or make groaning noises like the other, cheaper glider we got as a gift (that one lives in the family room, where it's used much less). |
Sadly, yes. I ended up getting one off craigslist, in the same color I wanted, for under $200. A total steal. It's wonderful. The gliding ottoman with nursing stool pull-out is also wonderful. The only drawbacks - it's a little narrow for my DH to sit in really comfortably and it doesn't recline at all. |
We spent almost $600 on our Dutailier glider; the rest of our baby furniture was also from Ikea. It is totally worth it. That glider has paid for itself again and again. I would get the one you love if you can afford it. It's really worth it.
We did not buy the ottoman, though, and have been fine with the Medela nursing stool (though sometimes I just put my feet up on a padded chair, which works well too). |
does anyone have any experience with the gliders from either pottery barn or land of nod? |
We were planning to get a Dutalier glider and ottoman from Babies R Us because it was the most comfy one we tried out. But the price tag is just way too steep, esp. for the ottoman. The pull out nursing stand feature on the ottoman really appealed to me, but you can get a nursing stool, which is ideal for breastfeeding, for under $30. We got one by KidKraft from Great Beginnings.
For Black Friday, Babies R Us had the Shermag glider and ottoman (comes as a set) for half off so we got that instead of the Dutalier. I don't think they had it when we were there before, but when we did try out the Shermag it was even more comfortable than the Dutalier. The Shermag is $249.99 at Babies R Us right now for the set. You can probably find it for less elsewhere. And while some people have had their Dutaliers last for many years without complaints, I'm sure you could find just as many people who have had issues with theirs. All cushions get worn out, stained and less cushy over time. So why spend more on a glider and ottoman if you can find one just as comfortable for less? I would suggest shopping around more before you commit to the Dutalier. We're glad we did. |
We purchased a used lullabye rocker from pottery barn that we like better than the Dutaliers glider. It is more comfortable and fits in nicely with our living room furniture. |
Love my Dutalier glider, but I disagree with some of the PPs about the ottoman with the pull-out nursing stool. It was ok, but I had to put it away and get the wooden one once kid #1 was crawling, because I was terrified she'd get her fingers stuck and hurt in the mechanism.
Back to the chair though - it was nice for nursing, especially at night. I still have it even though I haven't nursed for a year and a half, because it's a comfy chair to sit and read in. And I'd also like to put another word in for those wooden nursing stools, I LOVED mine. I still love it because it's a footrest that sits under my desk at work, and it's only there because I won the war for it between me and DH, who wanted it for a footrest at home. With that footstool, I was comfortable nursing pretty much anywhere (I needed the stool because I'm pretty short, so on taller chairs and sofas, my feet didn't hit the floor). |
We bought very expensive nursery furniture that looks more adult and can be used later (crib into full size bed), but I couldn't bring myself to buy a brand new Dut. glider. I did buy one from Craigslist for $200. Original owner had for one child, showed me the receipt for over $800. It was in excellent condition, reclines, and has the nursing stool. Love it! And as long as there are quality models on Craigslist, I wouldn't buy one new. |
We got the Dutailier w/Ottoman from Buy Buy Baby with a coupon. Before DS we had a lot of money. I would do the same now even with a changed budget. I (and others) have spent countless hours in it with DS. He is 21 months now and we use it to read him his bedtime story before we put him in his crib. |
I bought one used 6 years ago that at the time it was probably already 5 years old. It is was in great condition then and still is. Its more basic than the ones sold today but compared to the cheaper ones you can buy mine is so much roomier and comfortable. My child is almost 6 and I can still sit in it with her and I still have it set up in her room. I got both the chair and the ottoman for $50 but I would pay full price for one in the future knowing how well they hold up and how much use it got. |
We got the extra large model since my husband is 6'3" and we still use it multiple times daily at 6 months. I'm sure we'll be using it at least couple more years since #2 will be here in May. Since my husband was only comfortable in the big model, it was definitely worth every penny. We also have the ottoman but probably could have lived without it. Whichever one you get, make sure it locks - I couldn't get out of it the first couple months without locking it still since I had a c-section. We got a $300 crib and have been completely happy with it and already had a table that worked well as a changing table so it was our one big nursery expense. |
11:36 here - I meant 16 months, not 6! |
If you love it that much, just buy it.
We loved them as well, but couldn't get ourselves to spend that amount. We instead wanted to make sure we had good/sturdy crib, dresser and jogging stroller, that would hold up since we plan on having multiple children. Baby Bargain gave IKEA an A in furniture, but also said it was great to outfit a room in under $500, but if you were planning on having multiple kids, it might not hold up. We ended up getting a storkcraft glider for $190 off Amazon with free shipping. So far it has held up well! |
