Non puffer winter coat -girls

Anonymous
My DD has my linebacker shoulders. Puffers are really awkward on her - she can’t move her arms. She also doesn’t do well with really fitted coats. Looking for alternatives and I’ve bought and returned 4 coats already. Also not too girlie.. Size 6 or Girls small

Any suggestions? Treasures on the internet?

Are you thinking about a wool coat? Or a regular winter coat that is just roomier?

Land’s end squall jacket?

Maybe try a three in one. Or size up, maybe you're buying her the wrong size.

If you get one like this with cuffs, then you can size up and the arms won't be too long because the cuffs will stop them from falling too much.

I know this sounds crazy, but patagonia snowbelle. Not overly puffy, boxy cut, fairly thin padding for a snow/winter jacket. If you buy it new, it's $199 but you can get them on ebay for a lot cheaper. She'll also be able to use it for YEARS. My DD had the same jacket for 3 years. We've just bought the second one, a bit big, which should last her into and possibly through middle school.

What about a layered coat (inner fleece + shell)? Recommend llbean.

Buy a boys coat. I have shoulders like your daughter and only buy mens t-shirts since they fit broad shoulders so much better.

+1 works for my broad-shouldered DD

Try sizing up, we always have to buy the next size for winter coats, especially if they're wearing layers underneath.

Why/how does it last for years?

For one thing, the boxier cut allows for more growth. They have the grow-fit feature so the sleeves are able to be lengthened. And they are really well made. We put ours in the wash probably every other week and it's held up fine. If any damage does happen to it, Patagonia fixes it and ships it back to you for free. We did do one puffer jacket that got a hole in it and we had it fixed and back to us in 2 weeks.

Go with packable coats. DD has one from Lands End and the stuffing compacts.

My daughter is more of a plus size and none of the girls fitted puffer coats fit her. I went to the boys department. they have a totally different fit and it worked.

Re: Patagonia. They also don’t use much Velcro. Which is the part that always falls off or gets messed up.
